Because he is Irish. Also, Northern Ireland is NOT part of Britain.

Because he's from Clones which is in Co. Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland, last time I checked anyway.

Reckon Barry has an Irish passport . Born in south in Monaghan , Ulster , but thats not necessarily Northern Ireland for those unacquainted with things Irish .

That he boxed out of Belfast may throw some people , and his manager was Barney Eastwood , who was  Belfast / Holywood based .

Barry received a gold medal earlier in the Ligging event to double the amount of golds at this Olympics for Ireland. It was a landslide victory. Seb was a distant 2nd, and took the silver, Inverdale claimed the bronze.

Born in one of the three Ulster counties in the Republic, McGuigan was able to box for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games as the province's nine counties are covered by the same boxing authority (an anomaly that also allowed Paddy Doherty from Donegal to do the same and win a medal). However, McGuigan later took out British nationality and fought out of Belfast under what he called the "peace flag". Undoubtedly he did it for the money, and I remember that years later he won a celebrity motor race at Brands Hatch and stood proudly as God Save the Queen was played as the victor's anthem. To me, an unprincipled scoundrel, opportunist and bandwaggon-jumper. Unfortunately, our country has long been bedevilled by such people.
