Here's her efforts yesterday on Phillips Odowu's poor efforts in Triple Jump Qualifying:

Denise Lewis, BBC Sport athletics pundit
On Phillips Idowu's first attempt in triple jump qualifying: "I'm surprised he looks as good as he does.

He looked very laboured even in warm-up

Denise Lewis, BBC Sport athletics pundit
On Phillips Idowu's second effort in the triple jump: "One of the telling signs is that he's not going to touch whatever part of the body is injured. The reception he is getting from the crowd must really be helping him."

Well I was there and the reception for him was what you could call muted, compared to the loud support for every other Brit taking part, even the 'useless' Javelin thrower.

Katharine Merry, Olympic bronze medallist and BBC athletics commentator
On Phillips Idowu's failure to make the triple jump final: "What a horrible, horrible number 16.53m is. He was 3cm short but would have had a nervous wait even if he had gone further to see if he was in that top 12. He was rusty, the shape he was in just wasn't good enough. He still gets a ripple of applause from the GB crowd."

Cymro - you are so wrong. Do you not remember BBC getting the prize catch of Cathy Freeman as an expert. All she did was go "wow" with the occasional "oooooooooooh".
It was excruciatingly embarassing and think Beeb let her go after a few days.
Report berto77 August 9, 2012 10:06 PM BST
I don't rate Denise as a pundit, her talents obviously lie elsewhere, but I find Colin Jackson far more irritating.  I'm sure he's a nice fella but he just states the bleeding obvious every single time.  No insight and looks even worse next to the brilliant Johnson.

When watching a slow mo replay of a sprint:  "he was fast out of the blocks".  Laugh

When watching hurdles: "he doesn't want to hit a hurdle" Shocked

When the Brit trails in last: "he'll be pleased with that". Blush
Report the silverback August 9, 2012 10:20 PM BST
He said something along the lines of "I think Jamaica will be pleased with that" after their 1-2-3 in the 100m in a tone of voice suggesting he was being very insightful.
Report upthebumnobabies August 9, 2012 10:30 PM BST
My 2p's worth. She's usually not that bad during other events and championships. I think there's a few reasons why she isn't doing well here. Nervousness about the GB athletes. The fact it's a home games/distractions. The work load, mornings and often on the evening show and possibly a slight hint of jealously of not being able to perform at these Olympics. All in all she's not working at 100% of her abilities as a pundit. I remember Sue Barker a few years back - she was horrendous. Not as bad these days though.

She's certainly better than Kelly Holmes, might be good at running but struggles to get her words out of her mouth when the cameras are rolling live.

Anyone know why Johnson doesn't work for US tv covering the Olympics? He's one of their all time greats. Is it simply a case of we pay him more?

Can't imagine the likes of Redgrave covering the Olympics for another countries tv.
Report GPT August 10, 2012 1:03 PM BST
May be he does it's not live on NBC apparently.
Report GranpaChook. August 10, 2012 1:04 PM BST
If you think our pundits our bad then you've never watched US TV during sports.  Google Carol Lewis and you will quickly see why Johnson doesn't go anywhere near US television.
Report kincsem August 10, 2012 1:06 PM BST
^ my guess is US TV don't do reasoned analysis, just "hail to the chief", "salute the flag", "go USA", "USA is the bestest", and such and such.
Report mrtopnotch August 10, 2012 1:13 PM BST
US TV doesn't do live Olympics fullstop
Report sageform August 10, 2012 1:34 PM BST
One of the reasons that we are fortunate enough to have Johnson is that the US media didn't think he had enough personality to "market" compared to the likes of Carl Lewis. I remember an interview with a US media type after Johnson replaced Lewis as their record breaking star and this goon said that Johnson was a disaster as he was lacking in personality by which he probably meant shouting and waving his arms about. Their loss and our gain.
Report elise August 10, 2012 2:14 PM BST

Been there and heard them. It's embarrassing. If you think the Beeb is a bit OTT at the moment, once you've spent 10 minutes watching NBC and the like, you really want to switch back to BBC.

Think Johnson probably too intellectual as well for mainstream US audiences. Brilliant that we have him every time the Beeb show major athletics meets.

Report upthebumnobabies August 10, 2012 3:56 PM BST
Johnson has worked on the BBC for years because we cover Track and Field on television a lot more over here. US TV doesn't offer him constant, stable work. It's probably a mix of factors by Johnson, including this.
Report upthebumnobabies August 10, 2012 3:59 PM BST
This article last week tells you all you need to know about NBC's commentary:

"The Brits earned three track titles in under an hour, with Jessica Ennis gutting her way to gold in the heptathlon, Greg Rutherford somehow winning the long jump, and Mo Farah running away with the men's 10,000m as Willie and Kate jumped up and down in the stands. Add those to two golds and a silver in rowing, and one gold in women’s cycling and it was a great day for the home team. They passed Russia to take the third spot in the standings"

Russia were never 3rd in the rankings. When I read this last week they were down in 11th, and hadn't been higher.
Report I win every time! August 10, 2012 5:28 PM BST
upthebum - the US (and a few other countries) base their medal tables on 'volume' of medals and not most Gold, then Silver as tie breaker as we do, and incidentally as the official Olympic tables do.

That being said, I agree with all the rest mate, US coverage is pathetic. I had the misfortune of living in the States whilst a Winter Olympics were on (think it was Lillehammer) and the coverage was abysmal.

Finally, love the name :)

Johnson is sublime. He has got the lot ~ gravity, accuracy, knowledge, educated, professional, insightful, humble, thought provoking, objective and succinct. And a reasonable sense of humour. Been there and done it. A classy individual on and off the track it would seem.

Brilliant when the GB high jumper was rolling out the usual clichés, how he'd changed his life and work hard. Johnson 'exactly what has changed?' Grabarz 'well not a lot, really' Grin

insightful, humble, thought provoking

Indeed he is humble. When everybody else was going on about the triple jump, he had the humility to admit he knew nothing about the technical ins and outs of that particular event. I'm always impressed when somebody has sufficient confidence in his knowledge to be able to point out when he doesn't know enough about a particular discipline to talk about it in-depth.
