idowu looks flat, currently 12th in quali, he'll get crucified if he flops after the build up
By:
he's got no chance of making the automatic qualifying mark on what we have seen so far so will have to hope he gets through via top 12
By:
he's not top 12 now, he has to go better or he's out
By:
Will be shocked if getting in top 12, let alone medal.

Metal mickey Idowu should be deported....a parasite
By:
Here we go, excuses excuses excuses...

I actually sympathise with him. He's injured - its part and parcel of the sport. just hope he doesn't blame others for distractions / interference.
By:
Give him a ****ing break, even if not 100% he deserves his place for what he's done, nobody else was going to make an impression. This has been the blokes dream for years and it's just been shattered
By:
Still - nice haircut though.
The guy is a fking show-pony, which is fine when you win. When you play fast and loose with the 'Team GB' ethos then put in a shift like that, you deserve more than a few quizzical looks. |

Clown doesnt know what surgery he needs on leg, doesnt look like he gives a ****!

We don't hear so much about the injuries in other teams. The chinese hurdler out in 3 seconds after 4 years of expectation.
By:
unless its usain bolt, the bbc dont report on foreign athletes injuries

By:
It's sport. Injuries happen.
By:
No Brit appeared injured last Saturday night?
By:
Of course injuries happen.
It's how you deal with them medically and then managing the public (i.e tax / lottery payers) understanding of the implications of this injury that count. Idowu has set himself up in direct conflict with UK Athletics and the whole (as I read it) 'Team GB' ethos they have attempted to build in the lead up to the games. He's been cut slack, since he's a proven performer in big competitions (and you cannot deny this). However, by giving it the big 'I am' he's given himself no wriggle room. If he knows best then great - now go and perform, forget who said what - just get it right on the big day. ...and then he does what he did this morning. |
By:
And disruption of the ethos was caused by Team GB, this could all have been dealt with behind closed doors but for some reason they wanted to make a deal out of it. Idowu would have done what he felt was going to put him in the best condition to compete, ok perhaps he was shielding his lack of fitness but that's it
By:
He's said he hasn't been lottery funded for 3 years now fwiw

You're right of course - it really all comes down to whether (Athletics)Team GB should have been put in this situation by one high-profile athlete and if so, how well both parties handled it.
In the age of Twitter, 24 hour news and an insatiable public demand for all - things Olympic, it's a tough one to call No one comes out of it smelling of roses but the bottom line for me is that Idowu thought he knew best, went it alone (was still saying how great he was this time last week), spurned a well-oiled and funded medical and PR regime on what now looks like a misguided ego-trip and, ultimately, did not perform when it mattered most. Will he eat humble pie - or get another piercing? |
By:
You're talking about the bloke who broke down because he only got silver in Beijing here. You honestly think he did this for an ego trip? He made a decision that he believed it would get him in the best possible condition to compete. He hasn't performed but he in all likelihood he wouldn't have either if he'd stuck with GB

By:
I've acknowleged his past achievements.
He has an outsize ego and / or is incredibly badly advised. |

By allowing himself to be backed into a corner by adopting - to a world run on spin and PR - a non-concilliatory attitude towards GB Athletics. Okay it takes two to tango but he is the athlete - UK Athletics is the Team. Even from a PR angle, a confrontational attitude with the sports governing body could only ever result in one 'winner' (note use of inverted commas). By continuing to claim he is fit and ready to compete days before he was clearly not able to. The actions of an idiot who has dug himself into a hole and who is bent on keeping on digging. |

By:
Nonsense, athlete's in every sport maintain they are fit when they aren't. He said he had a nerve issue and wanted his physio on hand to try and sort it on a daily basis so stuck in the UK. Sometimes you don't know how fit you are until the day, obviously he didn't want to go full out in training in case he aggravated it whilst it was healing

By:
Ah well, nonsense right back at you too then, because coaches / managers expect a degree of honesty from their charges when it comes to their fitness.
Idowu is an experienced enough atlete not to have to guess at his level of fitness. Anyway, this is minutiae (?). Lets's agree to disagree. 19th Gold up now - where's our next Athletics medal coming from - Grabartz would do just fine! |
