the end of communism did for them, even though the Soviet Union broke up the combined golds of all the former soviet nations is far fewer than it used to be (and that's with far more combined competitors now)

you've only got to look at China to see what a difference communism makes, I know they have a huge population to choose from but a huge proportion of it is rural parts
