Agreed an awesome athlete, hate to say it but would blow ennis out of the water if they were competing against eachother today (when she was at her peak)

I think there is no doubt about the circumstances of the records of Flo Jo, she was an average athlete for many years before suddenly improving to those times. Far more iimpressive is the long jump world record of Mike Powell, it seems it will for another 15 years.

seen the graphs of her times from start of career to Olympic glory?
one long flat horizontal line for about 12 years then takes more than a second off PB in 8 months
was it worth it?

Griffith-Joyner dropped her 100m time by half-a-second in about 8 months after bulking up enormously. As soon as out-of-competition drugs testing arrived, she retired. She died at the age of 38 and her records are extremely suspect in most experts' opinion.
Same can be said for East Germany's Marita Koch who was without doubt heavily involved in the former Communist state's doping program. Her 400m mark of 47.60 from 27 years ago still stands and isn't being remotely challenged.

Everyone is dodgy, just look what has come to light in recent years. I used to think there was the odd taker but im sure there are loads on it. In the recent BBC doc about the 1988 100m the guy who had the samples said he went back and tested the frozen samples and contemplated bringing it to light but it was clear from his reaction that there were some many postivies

I am convinced there is massive doping going on with some very clever people in control
there is a discussion going on about 'micro-dosing' where tiny quantities are taken that allow more intense training and faster recovery to take place without triggering the test results and the use of really clever masking agents
so like DoNo says, I think there is a lot going on

Flo jo's record is also questioned because the wind. The comms at the time instantly remarked that it was wind-assisted, but were shocked when they found out it was down as +0.0.

And of course it wasnt always their sample. Seem to remember allegations of hiding bags of clean samples up their chuffs and popping them into the sample jars.

Exactly judorick, I think Johnson only got caught because he had his injury and had to overload so couldn't time it right. I'll post up an article tomorrow about it, I find it hard to blame the takers outright because they know that the people around them are on it and in athletics if you arn't top 8 you're next to nothing

got to feel a bit sorry for Ben Johnson given that pretty much everybody else had positive tests too (including Carl Lewis), the rumours are that Calvin Smith was the only athelete from that final never to have failed a test.

You only have to look at some of these eatern european athletes to see they were pumped full of god knows what, Jarmila Kratochvílová , Heidi Kreiger et al , they look more like geezers

tbf at least Koch and Kratochvila probably were level stakes with opposition, Caster Semenya isn't!
Who really thinks Heike Drechsler was clean in her GDR years? But she was a shining star after German reunification, it was so hypocritical.... Even Krabbe and Breuer were big stars before getting caught, Breuer in her late career again.

Was interesting last night watching the Women's discuss to see how mush further down the field the world record line was from where today's girls are throwing - another record from the late 80s DDR.
