And after that DQ, we see a formality walkover. Class. Reminds me when I was seven and we had to score a goal in a five-a-side contest to beat a team that never turned up.
Report Crisp77 August 1, 2012 10:14 PM BST
Match fixing (allegedly). Iranian in the lead doing well, looked a cert to win. Come out for the 2nd round and gets dQ'd within 1 minute for 3 lots of holding.

Ref in the Japanese fight was probably a bit of both helping up the fighter who was stumbling everywhere where he had readily issued a standing eight count to the Japanese fighter earluer.

Report judorick August 1, 2012 10:18 PM BST
yes I have watched all the boxing and it has been an excellent competition in every respect
Report Crisp77 August 1, 2012 10:20 PM BST
I must say I watched last few nights without incident. I actually prefer the scores not being shown during the rounds. Less of a distraction.
Report sj August 1, 2012 10:21 PM BST
Yeah it means fighters cant just get on their bike with 30 seconds to go. One hour till Joshua, think the crowd will take the roof off.
Tricky first fight

BOXING
Satoshi Shimizu was not a happy man after his defeat to Magomed Abdulhamidov, who fell down five times in the final round:

Shimizu said: "I was so shocked about the result. I didn't know until the final score. The first thing I did after the match was ask the scores.

"I was shocked about the final scores. He fell down so many times. Why didn't I win? I don't understand.

"This is the second Olympic Games I have played and even in Beijing I wasn't happy about the judgement, so I don't know what to do about that. I am really not happy about that.

"But I did do my best. I performed really well. England is the place of boxing and the spectators supported me so well so I am very pleased about that."

Cuban Savon. Tough first fight but he's on the right side of the draw if he can get through tonight I think he will get at least a silver

BOXING
Bizarre scenes in the boxing just now as Iranian boxer Ali Mazaheri is disqualified for a series of seemingly innocuous offences in his match against Cuban Jose Larduet. He spent a few minutes standing in his corner of the ring, refusing to go to the middle so the referee could acknowledge Larduet as the winner. Eventually he walked over to acknowledge the Cuban corner, before leaving the ring, ignoring both Larduet and the referee.

"It was six of one and half a dozen of the other. It was a terrible refereeing display," says BBC commentator Richie Woodhall.

I've been wondering that - assume it's because they've changed the scoring system, 5 judges - two most extreme scores dropped then take average of other three wheras when they show the scores they were registering when 3 judges pressed a button to signify punch landed.
Report judorick August 1, 2012 11:34 PM BST
yes joshua threw very little last round

fyi they only show the scores at the end of r1 and r2 and then not til the announcement
Report sj August 1, 2012 11:34 PM BST
Thought it was close the Cuban by 2 or 3. Joshua has just knocked out the best "technical" boxer in the division. Kid is 22 only been boxing 2 years
Report mafeking August 1, 2012 11:37 PM BST
there's home town advantage for you. cuban certainly nicked it.

should be good for a few golds in boxing and gynastics judging by that

Yep, but in previous recent Olympics (at least in Beijing I think) they've shown the scores accumulating as the fight is in progress right up to the final bell so that you know who the winner is when final bell sounds.Don't know why it has changed.
Report CJ August 1, 2012 11:39 PM BST
Joshua in a good place now, don't rate the AZE World Champ that much, big puncher but poor technically. Think the man to give Joshua most trouble will be Dychko from KAZ, a good mover for 6ft 9!
Report judorick August 1, 2012 11:39 PM BST
they've changed it so boxers and coaches don't know the score during the rounds
Report ReaseHeath August 1, 2012 11:43 PM BST
poor reason if that's the case - not crowd or viewer friendly.

Not sure what the down side is of boxers and coachs knowing the score. Particularly as it's boxing where scoring controversies are not exactly unheard of.
Report Happy Valley August 1, 2012 11:46 PM BST
impressed by joshua but do agree with some of the posts above, the cuban probably suffered a marginal hometown verdict

the disqualification of the Iranian was ridiculous and hope they protest and win their protest, the problem was the cuban coming in with his head low all the time
Report sj August 1, 2012 11:47 PM BST
It s stopped so that fighters fight the all of the last round rather than spoiling and running
Report judorick August 1, 2012 11:48 PM BST
its to do with 'integrity of competition'

there will be an announcement on the website of the official body of the sport http://www.aiba-london2012.com/
Report ReaseHeath August 1, 2012 11:52 PM BST
I get the point about preventing a fighter spoiling and running but would have thought the integrity of the competition was better served by having the scoring visible to participants, coaches, stadium audience and TV viewers at all times.
Report Kelly August 2, 2012 9:47 AM BST
Of all the sports in the Olympics , boxing is probably the most susceptible to a poor official / referee .  Has always been thus , but boxing has always refused to have more than one official in charge of a bout .  The sport got away with it early in its sporting career , as there was not the means to record what actually happened , but film has changed all that .  Except for the prime fact re one referee , and presumably no appeal procedure .  Most sensible sports have embraced technology ( except soccer notably ) , just needs a bit of will and sense to sort out a better system than they have , but I suspect there are vested interests always within the boxing scene who want to be able to have more than allotted influence on results ( amateur and pro ) .

So live with it boxing fans ( not one myself although competitors from my neck of the woods are always our best hopes for medals , sometimes despite officialdom ) .

Lol, they've deleted my post.

To summarise, the Japanese fella had his appeal upheld against the decision in his fight with the Azerbaijani.  The ref was a total disgrace.  BF clearly don't agree with someone pointing out the justice in this.

there was second appeal but it was also rejected.

Sergey Bubka (head of ukrainian olympic committee) told that Ukraine will go to Lausanne court to find justice about this decision in Khytrov's match.
