I know your thread is tongue in cheek, but what opportunities do black people have to row?

Donny , the historical fallout from the galley slaves probaly warrants a book ( or a documentary ) .
Different races have different qualities . And the mix daily becomes more of a cocktail . White Men Cant Jump was a popular film some years ago , tongue in cheek no doubt largely . Dont expect to see the Kenyans challenging for rowing medals , possibly not even a single sculler in the territory , but looking forward to seeing them when the real olympics start ( ie the athletics , I am old fashioned on that one ) . That is not to denigrate the efforts of the rowers , swimmers , riders , fencers , archers , table tennis players , synchronised (? ) swimmers and divers , weightlifters , gymnasts , etc etc , but the original Olympics were about running and throwing and jumping , and they are top of my pile every 4 years or so . |

Strictly Kelly, the original Olympics were about sprinting. And that was it. Just one race. Can you imagine spending however many billions of pounds that we have just to invite a few men who can speak Greek to run over about 100m.

i guess there is no role model for young blacks to take up rowing my thread is somewhat tongue in cheek, so its nice to get a couple of decent replies west africans seem power laden and decent sprinters, johnson traced his dna back to senegal, whereas east africans seem stamina laden and take over running events from 800m up over |

Big 'if' but if the Rowers do well at these games, we should secure some serious funding for the sport for the next four years. One hopes Siemens stay on board too as a major backer of the sport.
I'd like to see a huge talent recruitment drive in the inner cities. Massive generalisation and stereotyping coming up but take some of those 6ft plus basketballers and do some basic morphology and somatoptype tesestin and put them into clubs like London, Molesey, Tideway Scullers etc and Lea in the East End. Okay, it's a pipedream at present but you'd have to hope that something like this is on GB Rowing's agenda. Look at someone like Moe Sbihi, the big Muslim guy in the middle of the British Eight. He was a basketball player before World Class Start talent spotting got hold of him - look at what he's achieved. |

I agree roger. I had a decent opportunity to try my hand at various sports. But what chance do a lot of kids to play more than the basics in this country?

Well, my two girls were at bog standard Comprehensive schools. Monica got talent spotted by World Class start and she enthused Pam when she waas invalided out the Army.
So there we go - a combination of committed and well-funded talent spotting and a family role model. Gotta replicate that on a massive scale - easier said than done! |

They are doing that now. You can apply to have an assessment, but they are taking it up a level.
The GB development coach goes round with business cards and hands them out to likely candidates. Good interview with him on five live - says his mrs goes nuts as he gives out the cards in Sainsburys, pubs, everywhere. They go on limb length visually, then do physical tests. Then teach them to row. Then the training starts. Fantastic chance for young kids. |

Michael Johnsons documentary on channel 4 about the top sprinters in the world today descending from the slave trade is well worth a watch. Found it very interesting. Would be an interesting scientific study across all sports imo.

Going on physicals attributes however misses natural ability. Messi wouldn't have a chance in this country. And that's serious.

one of our top rowers ( pinsent ???) was on that ancestry program, and traced his line back to the kings of england, who were of norman decent and in turn were of viking stock,,,they did a fair bit of rowing so that may be another avenue to look at

I would of thought loads in that there them fishing boats off Jamacia and ting. Plus you'vegot the pirates of the african coasts would of had plenty of opportunity to row as well |
