Anyone think this is a decent bet given home advantage etc? I think we may personally come up short of peoples gold medal expectations but could see a few inspired athletes sneaking into unexpected medal positions.

Think price might be a bit skinny though at 1.8ish today.

fair play to him. under enormous pressure through no fault of his own really
Report I win every time! August 10, 2012 9:33 PM BST
agreed. Still think it should've been Cook though
Report berto77 August 10, 2012 9:35 PM BST
How does this repechage work?  The italian losing semi finalist still has a fight.  Has Muhammad definitely got a bronze?
Report I win every time! August 10, 2012 9:38 PM BST
yes berto. Two bronzes awarded
Report mafeking August 10, 2012 9:38 PM BST
as i understand it everyone who gets beat by one of the finalists even if it's in the first round goes into the reperchage with the 2 losing semi finalists and you end up with 2 bronze medallists
Report berto77 August 10, 2012 9:39 PM BST
Thanks, awarding 2 bronzes would explain my confusion.  Seems a bit generous!
Report Biscuit1979 August 10, 2012 9:42 PM BST
Awarding 2 bronzes does seem generous. Same as in the boxing, why don't the 2 losing semi finalists just have a bronze medal fight instead of both getting one?
Report judorick August 10, 2012 9:44 PM BST
its a long story but is the same in most combat sports

and is perfectly fair

reasoning being you lost to the gold/silver medallist early and might have got further had you not met him til later
Report Darlo Bantam August 10, 2012 9:45 PM BST
What the taekwondo fella got a bronze despite losing in the quarter finals? Go figure.
Report judorick August 10, 2012 9:47 PM BST
its called repechage meaning chance to return

the british judo heavyweight got one the same way

it is perfectly normal
Report upthebumnobabies August 10, 2012 9:48 PM BST
I thought it was because if a Semi Finalist got knocked out they wouldn't be able to fight again for 3 weeks due to the rules?
Report upthebumnobabies August 10, 2012 9:49 PM BST
Maybe that's just Boxing.
Report I win every time! August 10, 2012 10:06 PM BST
So.....3 medals to go. What we got left? Well for me there's a cert in the canoe tomorrow. McGeever or whatever his name is. So that's 2 to go. You've got to think Mo in the 5k should get a medal (although I don't think it'll be gold personally). So the last? Well there is the rest of the athletics programme which in terms of medals adds up to just the 4x400m womens. Chance there I feel. There's also the modern pentathlon and I believe GB have a reasonable shot in the womens. There's also the mountain bike to go at. Oh, and also the mens bronze medal playoff, although I expect Australia to win that one. Think this will come in, but Farah is the ket imho
Report I win every time! August 10, 2012 10:06 PM BST
*key
Report I win every time! August 10, 2012 10:07 PM BST
I should add that there are two other outside bets in the canoe / kayak sprints
Report Pun tang August 10, 2012 10:17 PM BST
Aside from McKeever and Farah, our best chance is probably the men in the K2 kayaking.
Report I win every time! August 10, 2012 10:41 PM BST
Modern Pentathlon woman ranked 4th in the world so must have a pretty good chance.
Report Wild Guess August 10, 2012 11:52 PM BST
It'll be tight! ... 62 medals nailed on! :)
Report chelters16 August 11, 2012 9:44 AM BST
McKeever medals (gold) thats down to 2 medals required I believe.
Report I win every time! August 11, 2012 9:45 AM BST
v. good start to the day. That's one of the two certs weighed in. 2 medals to go.

Remaining chances:

4x400m women
2 chances on the lake this morning in canoe
Mo Fo
Girl in modern pentathalon (4th in world)
Mountain bikers
Tom Daly in 10m Platform
men in hockey

8 chances. 2 medals required.

woodbridge, mens mod pent has made a decent start in the fencing, he could still figure in the medals as the day goes on, he's been making the frame in top competition in the last 2 years

slim chance but he's got the potential if he gets some luck with the horses

Report I win every time! August 11, 2012 10:09 AM BST
agreed. But no less unfair than people able to buy the best horses to 'win' gold medals at the Olypmics. Personally I don't think it should be included in the Olympics, but then I'm just a Marxist lol

But no less unfair than people able to buy the best horses to 'win' gold medals at the Olypmics.

Didn't help the Germans this time, their reputed 10 million euro horse was stuck at home munching on carrots.

A slightly disappointing day yesterday, the way both BMX riders were riding in their semi finals gave me hope that this could have been all but over yesterday but unfortunately not to be.

It might be a bit of an outside chance but id really like to see us grab an extra medal from eton dorney this morning in the two remaining races.
Report I win every time! August 11, 2012 10:15 AM BST
Is 'munching on carrots' a euphamism?
Report I win every time! August 11, 2012 10:16 AM BST
Sudoku - think Mo is the key. If he medals then this bet comes in. If he doesn't then it's still in the balance. Still pretty confident tho. Of course, if one more medal this morning then it really is all over.

I haven't had a bet on this but Mo should medal. Anyone who's on the medal market and is worried should look at hedging Mo outside the top 3 at 1.36?
Report LordBobbin August 11, 2012 7:33 PM BST
But that ploy does mean you're giving up a good chunk of your profits, and you're still not guaranteed to win a thing. You'd hope we'd get a medal from one of Tom Daley or the female Penathletes, but it's certainly not guaranteed.

First of all i have to apolagise for my lack of contribution to the thread the last two days, i was down at the olympic park yesterday and have been out all day today.

Secondly, i'm chuffed to bits that this has come in, at the start it looked a little ropey, then we got going, then we really got going and we should have done this at a canter, but we had a little stumble just before the finish line, but we have finally got there in the end!

Cheers stevo for your thanks, and congrats to anyone who has been on the overs. Ive really enjoyed the thread, been some insightful and interesting posts. And really glad that we dont have to go into tomorrow needing a medal!

Finally a massive congratulations to all Team GB athletes, yes the medal winners have got us to to this point, but each and everyone of them should be proud of what they have achieved here at london 2012. It has been a truly remarkable games.
