Meanwhile, massive crowds are coming out in appauling weather, just to see the Olympic Torch.
Anyway, expect a whole slew of negative stories as we beat ourselves up about the minutiae of dealing with large numbers of human beings and all the demands, egos, intolerance and general stroppiness that they bring. |

The press are desperate for big events like this to fail, just so they don't have to make stories up, like they usually do. The media has learned nothing from the News of the World scandal.

As a f'rinstance, I expect a whole bunch of negative stories about the time it takes to get access to venues.
I'm going to the heats of the Rowing. I have been told that there will be a 40 minute transfer from the park and ride to the venue and then 50 minutes from arrival at the venue to getting to my seat. I think these timings to be on the conservative side and have allowed 2 hours for the above process, which means getting up at what many would regard as sstupid o'clock. Now, for me, this is what you do to see world class athletes in an unfortunately insecure and terror-riddled world. I bet the media think we should rock up and plonk ourselves down and go 'come on then - entertain me'. |

Officers who will be patrolling the Games' rowing events at Eton, Berks., were amazed when told by senior officers told them they must not be seen with snacks such as Walker's crisps or Ginsters pasties.
Thames Valley Police insisted that before going to the Olympic events officers, including Royal Protection guards, must empty their snacks into a clear polythene bag. ![]() |

Sky sports news have spent the last 12 months trying to undermine the whole event.
ticketing scandal security now pick pockets they are simply seething that the biggest sporting event this country has ever seen will be broadcast on the BBC not sky sports. |

BBC now interviewing the same pickpocket gang.
As if you wouldn`t be suspicious if a gang of Romanians tried to dance with you in the street ffs ![]() |

You put a larger than average number of tourists in unfamiliar setting and let human nature do the rest.
But if there's a negative spin to be put on it then, hey, why not? No matter that the Met have got some measures in place to attempt to deal with this kind of thing, beyond what they showed on TV. Not everything to do with the Olympics is great and even for a pro-Olympic person like me, there's no sugar coated miasma to it. The G4S **** up is pathetic and money should be clawed back from them - but there was a Plan B and, arguably, having trained high-profile members of the Forces doing security work provides more reassurance. There will be other issues, which I hope can remain in the 'humerous incident' to 'requires some patience to deal with' spectrum, before we get into fiasco, disaster, tragedy arenas. But honestly, what does the Media World and a cynical British public expect when you, effectively, transport the infrastructure of a small country and drop it into London for a month? A seamless, problem-free and perfect wonderland apparently. |

How come other big events manage it easily. Christ even Ukraine managaed a slick operation for the European Championships. |

Dorney Lake has one road in. Not ideal but there we go.
It will mean a slick traffic (vehicle and human) management exercise to deal with the logistics of getting thousands of people in and out of the venue, and that's without the security checks. I know this will be the case, have planned accordingly and am happy I will be in as safe and secure a venue as is possible. I can't comment on the security and people-management action that Poland and Ukraine undertook for the EC's - I'm sure they were wonderful. Then, I will sit back and watch what might well be sporting history in the shape of our first Women's Rowing Gold medal, but if not, I'll be cheering like a b@st@rd for my daughter's flatmate in the Women's Eight. It's going to be a fiesta!! |

rtb - just a suggestion, but we're going to the rowing and have booked a train to Windsor & boat trip from Windsor to the venue. Only £5 a ticket and means you won't be stuck in hours of traffic.
I frequently go to Dorney for running & tri events so know it can get pretty congested. |

Cheers danno - sounds fun (hells teeth, it'll be fun anyway if you come with a positive attitude anyway).
I'm doing the park and ride in Bray thing. Got it all booked now. Can't wait. |
