Mike Ashley is a hard man to please. Chris Hughton's appointment was the first time in Ashley's tenure that a sound managerial choice was made and even at the start it was one Ashley was trying to avoid. But Hughton started making a Premiership midfield play as one and suddenly all were swept before them. This presumably upset Ashley but ultimately his wallet was involved and it made sense, if he was ever to sell that club, to get promoted back so he could put another over-inflated price tag on and avoid it being bought for a while, this was the only way. Almost inevitably promotion and the title was secured, with Ashley again mentioning how they might need a more experienced manager.
