Soho was like that from what I dimly recall. Almost unfurnished dirty book shops and clip joints, run by crooks who paid off the police.
Buying porn used to be a adventure? Never buy porn from a newsagent with young staff.. You'd travel to a remote shop on a hill, with local people, sweating it out, looking left and right. Heart rate high.
