Alderman Harris: "I'm ground zero, that's how I feel about it. My major business district is just shattered. You lose the two biggest icons. Why would Walmart or CVS come back to our communities ?"
Mayor Lightfoot: “The number of sites that have been up and run over by looters today is in the hundreds. Hundreds,” she said. “It doesn’t make it feel any better. I’ve been on calls and text messages with people all day today who fought hard to bring economic development to areas of the city only to see the Walgreens, the CVS, the grocery store, everything vanished in an eyeblink … It’s going to take a herculean effort to convince businesses not to disappear.”
Alderman Garza: “I just want to say, and I just want to tell you guys, my ward is a **** show. It’s cop cars burning, banks burning, we had to put the bridges up,” . “I want to tell you, this kicked off this morning at 11 o’clock, it wasn’t a protest, it wasn’t anything like that. It was about 40 people that showed up in the dispensary lot, a dispensary most of you guys know it’s like getting in Fort Knox in there,” “There was people trapped inside, they were trying to break down the front door, and they were calling the police and the police couldn’t get there fast enough. The employees had to escape out the back door and they got in. They got in through four doors, bulletproof glass, they cleaned the place out … I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m scared. This is broad daylight … ”
Unnamed Alderman: “I called 911 … they’re not even answering the phones anymore”
Alderman Lopez: "I've got gangbangers with AK47s walking around right now. What are we going to do, and what do we tell our residents other than, good faith people stand up ? It's not going to be good enough"
Mayor Lightfoot : "Thank you Alderman. Next question."
Alderman Lopez: "No, I want an answer. I want an answer. It's not something you ignore. This is a question that I have."
Mayor Lightfoot: "I think you're 100% full of **** is what I think"
Alderman Lopez: "Well, no offence, well f*** you then, who are you to tell me I'm full of ****?"

Mayor Lightfoot said that during “tough and difficult times, we ought to be able to have candid conversations.”
“There are a lot of incredible emotions that were shared on that call by fellow aldermen. Now all of them don’t feel secure or safe coming together with their colleagues because of one individual who decided to illegally tape a conversation that was intended to be a private conversation among all of us,” Lightfoot said. “Shame on him. Shame on him. That’s what I say.” |
