I think I've got some sort of virus / malware on my laptop computer

Every time I open a new window in Chrome I get a new pop-up window,  ea2.trackinfo.com     - then I occasionally am getting adult site pop ups as well

I installed Malwarebytes but it didn't find anything. Anyone with any ideas how to get rid of this without buying anti virus software?

I could do a clean Windows install but if I can avoid the time that takes and there's a better way of cleaning my machine that would be helpful

You can install COMODO anti virus free, which I've had on my laptop for 3 or 4 years, but it sounds more like an adblocker that you need and uBlocker is brilliant, again you can install it free.

do not buy virus software, windows defender should be protecting you 100%, make sure it's switched on, virus software a waste of money.

Try opening File Explorer, the yellow icon bottom of your screen, copy and past ea2.trackinfo.com into the search box top right, when it comes up, delete all of those files.

if that doesn't work then do a System Restore point.

Have you got a restore point you can go back to?

Dad got a virus off a bookies advert had to do a restore

Sure to be some tekkies along shortly though.

I have Windows defender but the updates have not been installed in months, I've been getting errors when trying to update it, think that could be why

I've backed up all of my files and I'm going to try a system restore

cheers for all of your speedy responses

install & run malwarebytes

get off network; reboot (ideally into safe mode but certainly off the network) and disable all chrome extensions

go to network settings and check DNS settings are correct -- ie your ISP or one of the reputable free ones like Google, IBM or Cloudflare

Could be something as simple as you've been cheated into setting your home page to an undesirable URL

you could try this link to see and change or delete it

did a system restore, still happening

uninstalled and reinstalled chrome, still happening

so it's something either in my chrome settings or something deep into windows

i am going to put up with it for the time being and if and when i will do a clean windows install which should get rid of it

As I can't actually see what's happening, I can only run through a couple of the easy to fix possibilities.

Next step is to check your chrome add-ons / extensions

"Manage Add-ons in Google Chrome"

https://www.shorttutorials.com/web-browsers/google-chrome/add-ons.html

Also, I checked around for ea2.trackinfo.com and it belongs to what looks like a legitimate site www.trackinfo.com
which has lots of sports data on it.

I didn't find any reports of virus's linked to that URL so it may be a side effect / symptom rather than a cause.

it's saying quite a few of my extensions have been corrupted, so i have removed them. i'll let you know if that helps

I've restarted Chrome and so far, touch wood, no pop-ups. so it was probably some of the weird extensions i had installed were hacked

Was replying to your 15.48 post but went into BC's site to look round before I posted. Hadn't seen the later post. Pleased that it's sorted

this is going to be a proper technical question now and i don't even know if it's possible

i am using a website where i am clicking my mouse a lot to look at data, and if i click too much in a short space of time it brings up a Captcha thing, "Are you human?" (no i'm not), but really i can get around it by doing the clicking slower but it needs to be done as fast as possible. does anyone know, without requesting from the site itself, a way around this captcha thing popping up?
