People who play Hamlet who aren't Danish are guilty of cultural appropriation, and we really need some Transgenderism in Romeo and Juliet.

Until such a time, all Shakespeare influenced entertainment on our TVs must be replaced with a film of white males being kicked in the face by a diverse group of student Marxists.

EVERYTHING seems to be overblown these days, there is no calm thought and mature rationality, it's just one hysterical media and social media mob sh1tstorm after another, always something to go mental about. Hysteria and mobs being the key word, and our politicians are normally so spineless they just go which way the wind is blowing, (Boris not bowing to the lynch mob a couple weeks ago aside). It's been going this way for years and it's just getting worse.

Aw diddums leftie troll following me around when I make a joke (again). Not got any pointless Excel charts you've wasted your time creating to post or Guardian article to copy/paste?

Othello is not in any way racist, although it is possibly homophobic.  And surely Just Checking knows that Romeo and Juliet was indeed "trans" when first performed.

If a time machine could prevent me having to endure As you like it for O level, I'd be all for it.Hated it.

Othello wasn't racist. He was just weak-minded and easily manipulated,

bit like the SJWs of today. Laugh

Conscience is but a word that cowards use,
Devis'd at first to keep the strong in awe:
Our strong arms be our conscience, swords our law.
March on, join bravely, let us to't pell-mell;
If not to heaven, then hand in hand to hell.

labour seem very keen to pull down historical statues with links to the slave trade, jumping on a short bandwaggon me thinks
Report lord skywalker June 10, 2020 10:37 PM BST
but pulling these statues down will do absolutey nothin to solve racism

I recognise that Othello is a nuanced character but at the end of the day he was a black man who strangled his white wife. Sounds like stereotyping to me      Silly

Who banned Zulu?

I have heard this on here only though. Could you post a link please or explain who banned it and where?

Luckily I have a DVD of Zulu. I also have Waterloo and Sharpe’s Waterloo but have misplaced themCry

Anyway crisp please let us all know what is going on, many thanks.

^^ Iago is the story. Racist and probably a closet gay and the considered the most evil of Shakespeare's characters by many.
Report salmon spray June 11, 2020 11:18 AM BST
Look m8 I did the play for "A" level right. I know Iago is the villain but Othello ain't no saint innit.

It's good to talk.

Tell us more Salmon.

I did Julius Caesar for O-Level. Not sure I understood it then or now but I learned a little about the skills or oratory from Mark Anthonys speech at the funeral and also learnt what a soliloquy was. ( Pardon me o bleeding piece of earth that I am meek and gentle with these butchers ).

Good that we are talking about Shakespeare and not statues. So much to learn from Shakespeare.

^^^ I did at uni, so I is better than you Grin
Report dave1357 June 11, 2020 11:32 AM BST
Anyway the play as a whole isn't racist was my point, whereas the Merchant of Venice is def anti-semitic
Report Whisperingdeath June 11, 2020 11:33 AM BST
Do tell then Dave,

I would have thought that the Moor would have owned slaves as a General?

Not seen the play, which, is a shame. I am looking forward to Theatres opening and will support them. I missed out on not one but two Chekov plays due the the Virus. The Khaleesi was going to star in one of them, another regret for me!

I am a bit sad that they see fit to stop us watching things. I don't think Little Britain was offensive, certainly it was not meant as laughing at as much as laughing with. Are we going to ban Till death do us part? Little Britain is not stuffed down someones throat it is " available ". Shocking unnecessary censorship.

Funny they are talking about it on Radio 5 right now. I loved Might Boosh

Merchant of Venice was my O level book

Teacher spent hours reading out all the parts and
he really enjoyed it.

Sadly only 8 lads from 130 in my year passed exam

Teacher didn't last long...

Certainly put Venice on my places to see list.
Report salmon spray June 11, 2020 11:51 AM BST
I didn't need to read it at University as I was soaked in it from the previous two years.
It was so long ago that I didn't come across the theory about Iago being a closet gay till years afterwards ( I thought it was more a class thing ). Moreover I was FORCED to go and watch Olivier playing him in blackface ( Horror of horrors. Any statues of Sir Laurence around ? )
Report dave1357 June 11, 2020 11:59 AM BST
You can hardly blame Larry - remember the black and white minstrel show was on every Sunday in those days,
