I lived in Elsham Rd just off Holland Park Avenue in the late 90's, and only a few doors from Vanessa Mae - the violinist. And, at the bottom of the road just around the corner Mr Michael Winner had been frequently seen giving restaurant reviews to food journalists. This was a nicer side of the area.
The other side where Shepherds Bush Theatre and Post Office were was rather unpleasant and littered with takeaway plastic and food waste; night time could be sleazy with drug taking and dealing not uncommon.
Not set foot since, but driven past a couple of times and it looked cleaner, more respectable and gentrified.
Hey case, I used to drink in the Sun, and the Eagle at the weekends, I also ran a football team out of the Orhard, the Travellers Rest for pool. The only pub I didn't like was the Askew arms.
The chippy was run by chinese, great quality, good service as soon as you got to the counter you would hear ro you wan, fit and chih, you wan warry (wallie). the other chippy was next to the Sun run by brothers from Cyprus, two great chippys four great pubs in Askew road, the Sun public bar was full of Dubs.
I was a Governor at St Stevens primary school just off the Askew rd. A fulham bookie, John Manly had a shop next to the chippy, no problem gettin hundreds on. the most I had on with him was £400 on a winner at Chelts 7/2, I think it was the County Hurdle the horse was Floyd. Happy days.

I used to drink a lot in the Bushranger pub in the 90's - A decent old-style boozer with sawdust on the floor.
I think it got turned into a "trendy wine bar"...........

Well, to put it in context, murders were going on there forty years ago but..
Cafe Rest? Was that the greasy spoon on the corner of Goldhawk Road? The owner was a mad dogs man. Greek I think. Good grub too.
I remember when The Springbok, opposite White City, was a rough, rough Irish pub; before it became a BBC hangout. Stan Bowles used to go in the Hills opposite.

Not been for 40 years, It's unrecognisable on Google Earth.
I've great memories of the Goldhawk social club, saw many great acts there the Who played there a lot, they were crap back then. One bad memory got stabbed in the Goldhawk rd by 5/6 brave Jamican lads, I was (honorary) captian of an all Jamacian team at the time my team mates went to Ladbroke grove and sorted them out!. I got a lot of stick from opposing teams at the time as you can imagine.

When I was around, the White City Irish community was being overtaken by the West Indian but large areas soon after fell under the influence of the BBC and pubs changed to fern bars. There were always a lot of winos on the Green.

A faint, safer echo of your experience, boxingthefox: I was arguing with a black man in front of his friends, trying to take the heat out of it by acting cool because he had a brick in his hand; but when I took my hand out of my pocket to make a point, all his friends moved half a step back. Nothing happened but, afterwards, one of his friends advised me never to take my hand out of my pocket unless I was holding a knife!

Luckly for me UB that back then (1963) they wanted to 'cut you' and not kill you, irony of ironies, the only Jamican doctor I have ever met treated me and and applied stitches, in Hammersmith hospital Du cane rd. He did a great job.

Loved the White City dogs, also Stamford Bridge BAGS meetings, Dagenham, Wembly, etc, etc, went to all of them. Stan would be at the White city doing his wages, terrible gambler in every sense of the word.

My father was a well known figure in Irish racing, he phoned me up one night to collect him and his 'mate' from Heathrow as they wanted to go to the evening meeting at Windsor on their way back from the French Gold cup.
Well I duly picked them up and took them there, his 'mate' was met by 'commissiom agents' when we got there, he was a well known 'gambling bookie' and before the race he asked me and my dad if we had a fancy in the race so if was the same as his to get on before his bet, if . I said no as I was skint after a bad run. The horse won (name escapes me) and went from 6/1 to 6/4 in seconds unusual even in them days, so fook knows how much he had on.
Well I took them back to Heathrow for their flight to Dublin and the mean bastard never even said 'here's a fiver for petrol' Gladly that whas the last time I was in the company of that tight Limerick coont, J. P. McManus.
