70's by a mile . ' progressive' rock turning in . krautrock going , glam rock  ,reggae hitting the commercial heights , and  punk taking things apart (!) ...really , you had to ask ? a load of different ideas in one decade . priceless time .

Scott Joplin and his Classic Ragtime first became popular in the 1880s

I agree with the diversity of the 70s music but the 80s had the Smiths

Certainly not either of the decades in  this century ,the musical desert.

Any decade from the 60's to 90's on other stratosphere .

1870s. Wagner, Bruckner, Mahler and Tchaikovsky .

‘For the first time, the art form of music became aware, and capable, of the ability to promote and to present itself to a wider, urban audience.’

This question has come up before, 1965 - 1975 best decade of music for me.
Report Platini June 6, 2020 4:17 PM BST
80s will always be my favourite cos that when I really got into music.

But quality wise, 70s was better.  Still not as good as the 60s tho. That time was in a league of its own.
Report Facts June 6, 2020 4:27 PM BST
Platini has it right.
The 60's will never be surpassed Cool
Report Shanelee1966 June 6, 2020 4:33 PM BST
The 70`s beats all the other decades combined.
Report HGS June 6, 2020 4:35 PM BST
As said, depends what age you were at the time. 80/70/60/90 in that order for me
Report Shanelee1966 June 6, 2020 4:36 PM BST
Now there is nothing new to be done, all the OAP`s are out touring from the 80`s topping their pension funds up,
regurgitating commercial tripe from the 80`s.

70s. 74-84 might be the ideal "decade", just for some controversy?

That's a pretty good point JC 74-84.
Report Just Checking June 7, 2020 12:16 AM BST
I think I could probably get by easily stuck on a desert island with only music from 74-84. Pretty much THE classic rock era for so many of the bands. Bands now are going back to that era for inspiration. Disco(!). Funk. Early 80s pop music, your alternative stuff like New Order. First Iron Maiden albums and NWOBHM. Even Madonna's good stuff was then. What's not to like?
Report Coachbuster June 7, 2020 12:16 AM BST
it's the decade you were 18 in
Report differentdrum June 7, 2020 8:39 AM BST
Probably the sixties but quality music has virtually died since the advent of the karaoke also known as X Factor.
