The UK's largest car manufacturing plant is "unsustainable" if the UK leaves the European Union without a trade deal, owner Nissan says.
The Japanese company's global chief operating head told the BBC people had to understand the EU was the Sunderland factory's biggest customer.
Ashwani Gupta said that Nissan's commitment could not be maintained if there was not tariff-free EU access.
Nissan has invested billions of pounds in the plant, which has 7,000 workers.
His comments come despite the Sunderland site surviving this week's announcement on the Japanese giant's global restructuring programme.
Mr Gupta said: "You know we are the number one carmaker in the UK and we want to continue. We are committed. Having said that, if we are not getting the current tariffs, it's not our intention but the business will not be sustainable. That's what everybody has to understand."

I sense the the inference is that you will be pleased - or at least unmoved- about those who voted leave losing their jobs. I will have sympathy for all of them.
That is the difference between leavers and remainers, the latter are too bitter to want to help the whole country along.

But The Guardian is firmly leftist, yet with it's tiny readership it has massive influence over BBC news content which is paid for by us all and presumably supposed to represent us all. It does not.

They should start from point of neutrality, and end at point of neutrality.
They can hold left right and center to account whilst giving balanced and reasoned arguments.

Very fair of donny given his political leanings. A publication that can only get 120k people to buy it should not be feeding their stuff to 70 milion people through the BBC.
The vacuum left by not having good journalists at BBC has allowed others to feed in their own stories.

The Sunderland Nissan thing.
Phurzt :car manufacturing was on a very shoogly peg long before brexit, the truth was neatly hidden, the only reason I am writing this is because the header is still calling nissan the Japanese giant, which is false as nissan and Renault are nearly inseparable and o e and the same. The entire sector has been at a crossroads technological, the ban on new diesel cars was quickly swept under the carpet as was the fact nissan/Renault was one and the same, don't forget the EU is basically VAG group driven, Renault hangs onto the coat tails and its collaberation with nissan is mirried in confusion.
Most likely it's all about tax and access to EU markets and trying to take on VAG groups iron grip.
The facts are simple, technology has moved but greedy car manufacturers don't like change, they care not a jot for pollution, health and the environment.
So it was all a used as a smokescreen by the infiltrated corupt anti brexit media (BBC ect)
Strangely the thing I can't get away from is Nissan is a good brand, the cars are designed as right hand drive, which in case your not aware a right hand drive is designed with a specific gear box for left hand use, the steering suspension, switchgear, wipers ect ect is not an afterthought when it comes to RHD as is every European car.
The Japanese stuff can be built here using the same template as is used in Japan, everything the same and sold to a RHD market, us the UK.
Makes a lot of sense for Nissan to continue manufacturing in UK imo, should not take too much to see they do, obviously the Renault factor is the prob. Nissan getting involved with Renault will prove to be a massive mistake but that's another thing.
Err who would of thunk it the Germans and Japanese fighting for world domination of car industry.Cant blame the frenchies for jumping into bed with the Japanese.
Can we not reinvent a wee cheap n cheerful all electric wee car and chase the lot of them, anyone being fooled by the retro fitting of existing cars with electric motors, like the vw golf ect needs to give themselves a shake, the body is too heavy, its old hat we need new design and innovation, good time to get involved again.
We need all new design , from chasis up, light weight material, non metal. Let the current dynasores dissappear for good.

Can't believe the French are still making cars and we ain't,sticks in the craw. They are without doubt the biggest piles of sheet ever driven but still they sell in this country, ffs even the Italians are still in the game, the fiat 500, seems a very popular car in UK, a wee very dear cheapncheerful....innit.

I love the look of the 500, beautiful in it's simplicity. A modern design classic imo. (not the enlarged one though, horrible)
I think that one is accepted as an established design classic, shame about what was under the design. I am told the new one is based on a Ford KA underneath?
Not sure but they are very popular and you can spend nearly 30k on one.

Wurstest car was a citroen Diane, never owned one of them, fckers never even had door handles on inside
I once rented one in Majorca. Couldn't get the fecker in second gear going up and down them hairpin bends on the west coast. When we stopped for a jump across the front seats we had to open both doors. Worst car I've ever driven I think.

Actions speak louder than words all the new investment as gone ton Sunderland and only last week Nissan announced the closure of their plant in Barcelona there is also talk of ****some Renault production to Sunderland if there are trade tariffs and delays at the ports. This sounds like the BBC asking questions in order to stir up trouble
