im trying to help a 70 year old whose got a little one man  business messing about selling a few cars, hes a  lovely old chap and told me hes on pension and does a bit selling/ buying cars, i mentioned that there is grants and ive heard that nearly everyone self employed working now or not have received up to 7500 quid.   i told him id look into it but wonder if anyone knows if he could be( eligible) for anything, he told me that probably not coz he hasnt closed during the lockdown but most i know have been given grants and still open etc
hope this makes sense !

If he hasn't closed during the lockdown, don't think he qualifies.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-a-grant-through-the-coronavirus-covid-19-self-employment-income-support-scheme#eligible

he needs his n i number and u t r number, plug them in that website and it will tell him if he is eligible.

my guess is that as he has a pension it will be a no, but nothing ventured nothing gained

The government has just updated its guidance in one of the videos (it says here) and there are also webinars for people who know what webinars are.

You don't get £7,500 unless you got profits from previous years. Is he registered for tax and secondly if so how much does he earn?

I believe HMRC contacted self employed people already. I am guessing that he might need to apply for Universal Credit or whatever it is called.
