The guy should go. He is a vile little weasel who must have indirectly caused thousands of preventable deaths. Not to metion the damage to the economy, job losses, businesses forced to close. All because this arrogant little **** thinks he should run the country, despite the fact that nobody voted for him. Angry

he prevented the early lockdown which would've saved us a lot of damage. Never mind, in a month's time we might be in the position Spain is in now, albeit with at least 10'000 more deaths.

How and when did Cummings prevent an early lockdown ? What evidence is an a lockdown 2 weeks earlier would have prevented deaths ?

I read that in sage meetings Cummings was actually on the side of more government action etc but given he's a hate figure for clueless lefties, I think we all realise his mere name or image is enough to create a cage rattling epic tantrum from the butt hurt remoaner / grauniad types..

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8268415/No10-chief-Dominic-Cummings-intervened-SAGE-meeting.html

"No10 chief Dominic Cummings ‘intervened at SAGE meeting to push for experts to back lockdown’"

"Two separate sources familiar with the meeting said Mr Cummings had pressed for lockdown measures to be introduced more quickly.

He allegedly asked scientists why lockdown was not being imposed sooner and steered the discussion in favour of faster action.

He also reportedly made clear he believed pubs and restaurants should close - something which did then happen. "

Following a policy of seeking herd immunity was Cummings' idea, and has been widely criticised in the scientific community as a disastrous  strategy.
Report Des Pond May 23, 2020 7:18 PM BST
Professor Hugh Pennington, who is based in Aberdeen, said the proposal, in which a large portion of the public are exposed to the disease in a bid to build up immunity, would result in around half a million deaths in the UK.

He added that the policy should “never have been speculated about” as all the evidence so far shows that the virus settles down “long before” herd immunity is reached.

An article published by The Sunday Times reported on the strategy of the Prime Minister’s chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, towards the outbreak – which was described by sources for the paper in late February as “herd immunity, protect the economy and if that means some pensioners die, too bad”.

That's not evidence is it? That is hearsay.

So a Sunday Times report which is firmly denied is evidence but a report that no one has contradicted is hearsay.
Report jollyswagman May 23, 2020 7:25 PM BST
dowing street denied in the strongest terms that the story in the times was true but i have not heard of any legal proceedings being started. he is said to have sh1t his pants at the ferguson estimates and rapidly became a big proponent of a lock down. so he went from one extreme to the other.

i think the spectator have also published a pro cummings piece too. it seems like there serious questions for his wife to answer as she was writing stuff that puts the spectator in an awkward position.

LOL hark at this hypocrite. The guy who posts:

"which was described by sources for the paper in late February as “herd immunity, protect the economy and if that means some pensioners die, too bad”. "

Then says (below in bold) that
"Two separate sources familiar with the meeting said
He allegedly asked scientists why lockdown was not being imposed sooner and steered the discussion in favour of faster action."

"That's not evidence is it? That is hearsay."

What precisely is The Times (a remoaner newspaper that despises cummings and recently has swung HUGELY to the left) quoting. Are Times "sources" NOT Hearsay then, just because you agree with them?

Exactly Tobermory. Jesus wept.
Report Des Pond May 23, 2020 7:29 PM BST
Yes, I acknowledge that, tober. I think the Sunday Times quote has more currency than the Daily Mail one, as it has been widely reproduced without any real contradiction coming from No 10.

Anyway, banging one's head against a brick wall is not an appetising prospect, either metaphorically or otherwise, so I bid you good night.
Report tobermory May 23, 2020 7:39 PM BST
Des, the report about Cummings arguing for lockdown was not a Daily Mail report, the mail just pasted it. I can't recall exactly the original source but it was not a pro Tory one.

With the ST report I expect it was based on something but the quote twisted the language used, to make it sound totally callous. Most likely the science was saying 'It's going to spread anyway, some people - mostly very elderly - will inevitably die, but this cannot be avoided and before long there will be herd immunity and so no sense to trash the economy'
Report Des Pond May 23, 2020 7:43 PM BST
Okay guys. I take on board your opinions. All the best. Let's hope we can get our lives back soon. Cool
Report jollyswagman May 23, 2020 7:52 PM BST
the government and its advisers were following the 2014 pandemic fighting plan. sadly this was a plan to fight the flu and went along the lines of - carry on as you are until a vaccine arrives and when it does arrive we will have some immunity. no doubt the immunity and not do much bit will have appealed to the libertarian traits within many of the senior tories. cummings is said to have misunderstood the science and at first he really majored on herd immunity but he changed his mind to want the lock down due to ferguson. it took them all a while to realise this isnt the flu.

on a separate note, tobermory i have seen a second paper suggesting immunity with not many people being infected. again not peer reviewed, annoyingly i have lost it, a chap who seems to be a very serious scientist said he thought it had merit. i am trying to find it again. fooe for thought.

Yeah, I think there is something to it looking at the case figures.

I think the flaw in the Ferguson modelling was the assumption that everyone is equally likely to be infected. Seems they were coming up with a worst case scenario and it was taken to be the most likely scenario.

Another flaw was the assumption that everyone infected would be equally affected, most don't know they've had it.

63,000 dead according to the times

experts say 10% have had virus

60/80% was said to be needed for herd immunity

6 x 63,000 - 378,000
8 x 63,000=  504,00

bloody good modelling I,d say before a death had actually happened, not to say it woiuld have played out like, but the stats seem to back him up
