Hopefully someone can solve an argument.
My mate who's a renowned bullshítter I think is pulling a fast one to save face - briefly...he mentioned something
(not worth mentioning) about an inch, and he added that it was 28 mill, to which I replied that it was 25.4mm.
He seems to enjoy arguing (and hates me always being right) and pressed on, until I asked whether google was gonna be
necessary to shut him up. As I was searching for the evidence, he's a fast-thinking spoofer...he said it was a measurement
used in plumbing in the 60s.
I said that even if that was correct, it was only an approximation and it's definitely 25.4mm to an inch.
He's like a dog with a bone and won't let anything go...and two hours later (after a few drinks) he mentioned it again!
I just ignored him except for once reiterating that I was 100% absolutely correct and he wasn't gonna prove me wrong,
but as you all will know with liars, he's used a 'tactic' on me and moved the goalposts mid-argument.
I can't find anything online suggesting that he's telling me the truth but I am curious now - I want to confront him with
conclusive proof that he's an argumentative, lying príck!
The week before, he did exactly the same thing as we were watching something about 9/11 and I said that only 4 or 5 frames of the Pentagon incident
had ever been released in nearly two decades, and that all they had to do to shut us tinfoils up was to let us see just ONE of the numerous CCTV cameras.
The excuse is as ever 'National Security' - I don't even understand what that means nowadays!
Needless to say...he'd seen film of the Pentagon crash and argued with me when I told him that he'd obviously confused a simulation with the real crash.
Three hours later, it was dropped into the conversation again - "I know what I saw"
Banging my head against a brick wall!

inch has been exactly 25.4mm since the 30s.
So what is your argument, that the inch was bigger then, or that there was piping that diameter?
There certainly is piping that diameter, you can still get it, which would make sense either as a current standard or as repairs of an old standard:

Thanks JC - I was unaware of the 1930s - I didn't need confirmation that I was right as I've
knew my conversions with Imperial & Metric since I was a kid - I still remember them today!

when i was plumbing 40 years ago there were 3 copper pipe sizes 1/2" 3/4" and inch,
these changed to 15mm 22mm and 28mm ,i think thats what hes using for his guide.

It was always close to 25.4 according to that, although the picture of all the different "inch" sizes tool is pretty funny, have a look at the link, every country seemed to have a different size.
I actually thought for a while 25.4 was just a close approximation myself, but it made sense to make it a round number.
Actually I wonder is a pint similarly rounded? Answer = no, it's apparently 568.26125 millilitres.
But it'll be converted much less frequently I'd imagine.
Did you ever hear the story about the Mars probe that crashed at high speed into the planet as different engineering teams got a unit mixed up and the flight model calculation was using imperial instead of metric? It was .... the Mars Orbiter.

AFTERTHOUGHT's explanation makes sense. Your mate was talking about the thickness of the piping, while you were considering only the diameter of the bore.

Speaking of plumbers or heating engineers we had a gas leak last week or so we think got the gas board out and yes we have a gas leak but he couldn't find it in the half hour time allowed for each emergency call out so he he capped off our gas and I had to get my own gas engineer he eventually found the cause of the leak our is a new build we have been in the house from new we bought it about 5 years ago it turns out persimmon had hammered 2 nails through the main gas pipe the gas pipe was unprotected and far to close to the skirting board in the living room the gas supply enters the house from the gas meter below our front room window I have contacted persimmon and sent off a copy of the engineers report and several photos of the damage I am foooking raging
