@ChrisGiles_

Update: following today's data from hospitals and ONS data, a cautious estimate of the number of UK excess deaths during the coronavirus pandemic to 19 May is

61,900

Of these 54,522 have occurred, the rest are estimates
·
2h
Replying to
@ChrisGiles_
Today's data from
@ONS
showed a big fall in excess deaths, but there were only 88 registrations on VE day (8 May), so was an undercount.

@NickStripe_ONS
estimates the figure was roughly 2,500 lower than a full week would have shown.

2/
Chris Giles
@ChrisGiles_
·
2h
The distortions caused by VE day make estimates more difficult than normal.

If you take the data at face value, the model gives v strange results, suggesting fewer excess deaths between 5 May and today than those testing positive in daily official data.

3/
Chris Giles
@ChrisGiles_
·
2h
Alternatively, if you look at the proportion of non hospital deaths and project on that basis, the estimates would be too high.

So I have taken a mid point. It's not ideal. But these decisions have to be taken, not ducked, and need to be done transparently.

Chris Giles
@ChrisGiles_
·

The truth is that this week's ONS data showing 55,000 excess deaths during the pandemic is likely to be an underestimate of the situation.

Next week, the figures (with 6 days not 5) they are likely to show higher deaths. That will also be a distorted figure

On a side note, another thing I find strange is this sudden adopting of anosmia as a sympton of Covid. I mean, we have known for several weeks that loss of sense of smell and taste are prominent signs that a person could have the virus. Yesterday, I wasn't watching that closely, but I'm sure that i heard a consultant surgeon say that he carried on working for days after experiencing loss of taste and smell. Supposedly unaware that those symptoms indicated that he should've self-isolated. How could an eminent medical professional not know what most of us were well aware of?

If you have loss of taste/smell, chances are you have a cold

So all you need now to get a covid test is have the sniffles and be over 5 years old

Coincidentally they need to test lots of people on 31st May to meet another self-imposed, meaningless target
Report SontaranStratagem May 19, 2020 7:58 PM BST
Loss of taste/smell could be because of pollen count being high as well

Blocked nostrils are a big thing at this time of year, and of course if you have something up the nose chances are its going to become inflamed and run like a tap ffs

They put it out there to get it known and then use it further down the line once more and more start experiencing that very loss of smell and/or taste

They waited for the pollen season to properly kick in and then added it, now anyone who loses sense of smell/taste right before dying on their death beds will be getting "covid" added to the death certificate Crazy

They are bumping the figures

Good point about loss of smell being Hayfever rather than Covid19

What UK needs is some type of test where people with symptoms can book a test and find out if they have an annoying but harmless pollen allergy or are infected by a dangerous virus.

Wonder if anybody in government or any scientists have considered rolling out this type of test Sont? Could be a really useful.

Nematode mate ........ I think you will find that you are my nematode.

Wiki :
.

Nematodes that commonly parasitise humans include ascarids (Ascaris), filarias, hookworms, pinworms (Enterobius), and whipworms (Trichuris trichiura). The species Trichinella spiralis, commonly known as the 'trichina worm', occurs in rats, pigs, bears, and humans, and is responsible for the disease trichinosis. Baylisascaris usually infests wild animals, but can be deadly to humans, as well.

Dirofilaria immitis is known for causing heartworm disease by inhabiting the hearts, arteries, and lungs of dogs and some cats. Haemonchus contortus is one of the most abundant infectious agents in sheep around the world, causing great economic damage to sheep. In contrast, entomopathogenic nematodes parasitize insects and are mostly considered beneficial by humans, but some attack beneficial insects.
