My first car didn't have power steering.  My 2nd car did.  My first sat on the drive for a few weeks until the scrapman came.  I drove the 2nd car in the meantime.  When it was time to say goodbye, I had to move my 1st car.  I could not believe how much hard work the steering was, having by now got used to power steering.  I did 100,000 miles in that car in 4.5 years.  Goes to show you don't miss what you don't know.

I had a Cherry .....not sure what type as it had both Datsun and Nissan badges on it.

It ran like a dream , quite as a mouse engine , and a steering wheel from a double decker bus.

It started to rot so had two new panels .....they were red , the car was Gold , I never resprayed.

Triumph Herald.

Old one. There was a plug in the driver's footwell. One time, coming back on the motorway, I had to take the plug out to stop it flooding.

Not a bad car. Had a bit of poke, for the time. But it was an oil burner. My neglect caused the engine to warp. Gearbox went too. Sold it for £50.

1970-Ginetta G-15

Bought new and a serious bad decision...

A fantastic performance car, with over 150 bhp per ton, and cornered like on rails!

That's the good news!

It was on cross ply tyres which, in conjunction with rock hard suspension, was desperately uncomfortable to drive.

When it rained the door bins filled rapidly, and the water sploshed around like a tsunami I had to drill holes to let it out!

The sunroof leaked so, on a work day, I drove with my tie over my shoulder!

There was no radiator or fan, at the rear engine, which was a highly modified 'Rallye Imp' unit relying only on a small radiator at the front.

Unfortunately, as a result it overheated, and blew gaskets, and on each time the head had to be skimmed. which raised the compression even higher so, in the end, I had to fit a radiator and fan!

Why the hell I didn't buy a two year old Lotus Elan instead, I will never reconcile!

One seriously BIG BAD purchasing decision but, had I learnt my lesson?

Look out for my next folly, coming soon, and be astonished!

Rover 25. Electrics (of what there is) can go crazy in those cars. Had to turn the rear window heating on to open the passenger door, and all sorts of bonkers combinations. Had another car, I could only get into it through hatchback.

Wow windsor, that must have been a close call! Shocked I don't think anyone can beat that one!

(The Rover eventually packed in on the motorway, whilst journeying to a weekend holiday. That's where the holiday ended.)

Had a Ford Escort after the Herald.

Another oil burner but I wasn't going to repeat the mistake of the Herald and poured over half a can into the engine. Exhaust started smoking going up Kilburn one evening in summer. By the time I got to Cricklewood, the traffic behind was hanging back thirty yards and people outside the pubs stopped conversation to look at us going by.

I once borrowed a Mini (possibly a van, can't remember) the battery was under the seat and I was instructed to put any fire out before it burned through the seat. It did catch fire twice Laugh. What a piece of shyte.

What year was the escort because you really don't want to know what they are worth today even the little 1100

Macarony I bought Escort in ‘87 but it was old then.
Maroon too, if that adds to its cachet.

I had a rusty red fiat panda as my first car. The doors, wings and bonnet were on their last legs but somehow it had passed an mot valid for a year. I think I paid about £200 for it, the exhaust fell off driving it home. Next day, down to the scrappy, and hey presto my panda now had one green door, one yellow door, a couple of blue wings and a black bonnet. He was then christened Joseph and the technicolor dreamcoat and I lived happily ever after, well for a couple of years anyway until the engine packed in.

Second'oddball' car was a custom built 'Viva GT' for the 'Dealer Team Vauxhall' racing team driver, Gerry Marshall....

It was finished in an American 'Day-Glo' orange, with dark thick & thins on the waistline, and a black, lift off fibreglass bonnet.

Specially modified engine, and the filler cap in a sealed boot.

It had wider section rear rims, and a massive wide seat for Gerry's fat derriere!

It was an unmitigated disaster, and 'blew up' heading back north, after collecting it from St Albans!

My first boss was a car fanatic lady fav. He bought a new Escort Mexico, and paid a lot for having it in black with gold leaf lines on the panels (JPS springs to mind), it was a good car. He then bought an old merc 280SL and had it renovated to 'as new' condition, stunning thing. Blew the lot in later life, either one of those cars would be good money now.
