keep being sent threatening letters of £80 fines if I don't join, I don't want to vote so why would I need to sign up to this list, makes no sense

question is can they legally force people to pay this fine if they don't.

Why dont you join the list then just not vote.

No fine and you dont have to vote.

Sorted.

No fine would come your way. Just more threats. Don't put you'r name on if you don't want.

https://www.gov.uk/electoral-register

What happens if you do not register
You must register to vote if you’re asked to do so and you meet the conditions for registering, for example you’re 16 or over and you’re British or a national of an EU or Commonwealth country.

If you’re asked to register and do not do so, you could be fined.

You will not be fined if you have a valid reason for not registering, for example a long stay in hospital, or you have severe learning difficulties.

If I understand correctly it's illegal and liable to a fine if asked to and not complied to register. Like someone said join, and not vote; benefits are it helps one's credit rating and is a form of ID.

I have been sent these letters for over 15 years at different addresses, never voted, never been fined, just that recently the letters have more frequent.

What is the point, I have no interest in voting so why would I join the list, it literally makes no sense, I wouldn't join a gym and then never attend, I wouldn't go to an interview if I had no interest in the job, I wouldn't rent a home if I had no intention of living in it so why would I join a voting list if I have no intention of votingLaugh

I wouldn't just sign up to stop letters, not being blackmailed.

I think you will have to bite the bullet and sign up. There are many strange ones but it's the law I'm afraid.
Report darren_discombobulates_sports May 14, 2020 10:02 PM BST
we'll if I haven't after 15 years I don't see why I would now. I'd pay the fine if I had to but not joining any list, doubt it carries a prison sentence, I wouldn't actually mind my time in court so I could explain the ridiculousness of it, voting is not mandatory, so why would registering be.
Report politicspunter May 14, 2020 10:06 PM BST
I am not sure about where you go if you refuse to pay the fine but I couldn't rule out prison being your destination.

It says the electoral register is to minimise the risk of election fraud and increase trust in our electoral system.

It certainly does make life inconvenient without registering as I have found out.

I didn't register as I did not want an ex boyfriend to know where I lived and nowadays it is very simple via the internet to find out.  I explained this to the people who came to my door from the council about it and it was okay for a couple of  years, but last year they came up with a form I had to fill in and then get certified by the police or a doctor etc.  It was quite simple and now I am registered to vote but my name does not appear on the voting list.

When I wasn't on the voting list it made it more difficult getting a mobile account and various other things were more difficult.  It didn't stop me getting anything but the process was not as smooth as when I had been on the list.

"I wouldn't actually mind my time in court so I could explain the ridiculousness of it".  Yep!  you certainly would be trying to do that very thing.

Agree annie, i never existed on the internet before i signed up to the electoral role and now the internet knows all my relatives and my address.

Reckon the op should sign up under a spoof name.

annie, that's solid advice. If you don't register, your credit rating will almost certainly be affected, meaning it will affect your ability to get loans/mortgage etc. There are always loan sharks of course!

Well, do you own your house or are you the registered tenant with the council?

Report Ibrahima Sonko May 14, 2020 10:29 PM BST
Just searched my name on google and now zero results, bizarre as searching your own name is scary.

Maybe your details are not being sold like they were before.
Report Des Pond May 14, 2020 10:31 PM BST
If you do register to vote, make sure you opt out of the open or edited register. that's the one that they sell to mailing companies, polling companies or anyone who wants to pay for the information.
Report Ibrahima Sonko May 14, 2020 10:42 PM BST
I reckon if you signed up under a unusual name say with 3 wives and 10 kids, it would be a very interesting to see how it goes.

Sadly they already know who you are and who lives there.

So many myths about this topic
1 you will not be giving a fine.
2 you will not be taken to court.
3 will not affect your ability to access loan/mortgage.
4 don't fill in if you do not wish.
Be your own person and don't submit to threats.

They will catch up with you and when they do, they will go back years to get the money you owe.

I pay council tax here so letters are always addressed in my name.

yes, like I say they are more than welcome to take me to court. I'm a law abider but not being forced into doing something so silly, I have no interest in voting so no interest in registering to vote.
