Most people understand what stay alert means. They just don't understand exactly what the UK government means by it. That's why the UK government had to scramble around first thing this morning clarifying exactly what they mean and elaborating by giving examples.

You had people doing the Conga on a rope the other night jumping into each others' breathing space who thought there was nothing wrong with it because they were spaced 2m apart. In the middle of a pandemic. Every country has a large proportion of people who need things explained to them in minute detail. Half of them are of average intellingence or less. And they are the type of mugs who ruin it for everyone else, so of course they should have explained it better. It's fairly important to be clear during a public health emergency. Boris communication with the public during all of this has been abysmal. The guy is simply out of his depth to lead effectively during something as serious as this. Literally nothing he has done has been impressive. A country of 66m should be able to produce someone much more competent than him. It's not a left or a right thing.

Boris was elected as a single issue politician. Currently, that issue is almost irrelevant and consequently Boris is totally out of his depth.

There are plenty more able politicians, especially within the Tories (even after the purge). You know how it goes though - people tend to rate the chap they want to have a beer with more than the analytical and able, maybe somewhat distanced, technocrat. Saw that perfectly in action during the Tory leadership campaign once again.
