New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the country will not have open borders with the rest of the world for "a long time to come".

Ms Ardern was speaking after attending part of Australia's cabinet meeting via video link.

The meeting discussed a possible "trans-Tasman bubble", where people could go between Australia and New Zealand freely, and without quarantine.

But she said visitors from further afield were not possible any time soon.

Both Australia and New Zealand have closed their borders to almost all foreigners as part of their Covid-19 response.

^

It is interesting.

New Zealand had very few cases and deaths due to shutting borders early.

This means very few will be immune.

If they had followed a more relaxed model there might have been 1000-2000 deaths in mainly older people so great news they have saved those lives.

But if they have to close borders for a year or more (until vaccine) how much will it cost the country when 6% of their GDP is from tourism?

Are 1000-2000 lives now worth more than the cost of to future life from the drop in living standards?

This is the problem with lockdowns and closing borders. Starting the measures is easy. Getting out of them is almost impossible before a cure or vaccine.

And rightly too. Why'd one allow foreigners who'd be carriers? New Zealand and Australia are doing fine as they are. The immigration policies of these two countries have been very stringent and astute all along so much so that the most represented minority group in the UK find them a challenge thus only about 143k (Indians and Pakistanis).

Both Australia and New Zealand have a vastly higher percentage of foreign born people living in their respective countries than is the case in the UK.

Today, Australia has the world's eighth-largest immigrant population, with immigrants accounting for 30% of the population, a higher proportion than in any other nation with a population of over 10 million.

Australia take the right kind of person from the right kind of country, so they don't have numerous segregated towns and the associated tensions which that brings.

Are there many immigrants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria in either Australia and New Zealand? These 4 groups make up the bulk of the immigrants into the UK presently outside the EU.

Yes, there is a larger portion of Indian-born folks in Australia than there are in the UK.

A significant portion of the 6% GDP from tourism, if not pretty much all of it, is lost even if the border was open. (i.) More people have no jobs/money and can't go. (ii.) There are fewer means by which to travel to any destination. (iii.) Many countries have policies that bar or discourage leaving for international travel. (iv.) Many countries have requirements on return from international travel that discourage travelling- someone might be able to afford two weeks in New Zealand, but can they afford an additional two weeks off work if their government mandates quarantine on return. (v.) People are reticent to leave their home country in case something happens. (vi.) If New Zealand had done a UK as you suggest, would it even be appealing as a tourist destination? And so on...

What they have done is sacrificed what tiny slither of that 6% remained, in order to consolidate interior safety with a view to establishing an otherwise full internal economy. By shoring up their internal economy they are allowing their people to function normally bar international travel. People within New Zealand will be able to take holidays in their own country helping to support the tourist economy.

If you asked 1000 people in the UK, would you be prepared to sacrifice international travel in and out for everything else to be normal till a vaccine arrived, what percentage would go with it? 80%? 90%? The tourist sector would have to be addressed, but on the evidence of the last couple months people have no problem going to UK coastal resorts and national parks...
