Time was and observing what was happening elsewhere seems to have helped. They went into "lockdown " early when not many cases . Much of Africa has low density population. There is some (unproven) theory that warm air temperatures slow down transmission rates ( that won't help South Africa as winter approaches)
As with everything, India is a worry, cases are rising and very large population many living in high density cities.
Hope they are still doing well in a couple of months. Not sure how India can lift lockdown but also a real concern as to how people will be able to afford food - doubt government will pay them 80% salary.
