French researchers are planning to test nicotine patches on coronavirus patients and frontline health workers after a study suggested smokers may be much less at risk of contracting the virus.

“Our cross-sectional study strongly suggests that those who smoke every day are much less likely to develop a symptomatic or severe infection with Sars-CoV-2 compared with the general population,” the Pitié-Salpêtrière report authors wrote.

“The effect is significant. It divides the risk by five for ambulatory patients and by four for those admitted to hospital. We rarely see this in medicine,” it added.  Plain

It found that of those admitted to hospital, whose median age was 65, only 4.4% were regular smokers. Among those released home, with a median age of 44, 5.3% smoked.

i wonder if he has considered age being a factor rather than smoking ?

When I smoked I averaged a cold every 2-3 years.  I stopped smoking 2 years ago and have had 5 colds in that time.  Not that am I advocating smoking as a preventative measure against colds; it does have some other side-effects after all.

Both those figures indicate the % of smokers going to hospital in the first place for this is disproportionately very low

Report tobermory April 23, 2020 6:17 PM BST
There was a study of the first wave in Wuhan which I think found that only 5% of patients were smokers. There are pros and cons to everything you do I guess.

Smoking is loaded with carbon dioxide ,and corona virus stops carbon dioxide leaving the body, but the carbon dioxide that is in your body can't escape because of the corona, and it kills you.But when you smoke the carbon dioxide in the body mixes with the smoking carbon dioxide and then the smoke blown out removes both groups of carbon dioxide.more tests are needed.
Report lurka April 23, 2020 11:52 PM BST
smoking reduces oxygen in your blood and your body can be tricked into producing more red blood cells to compensate. Red blood cells carry oxygen to your organs. Cigarette smoke is full of carbon monoxide. There is a form of doping called carbon monoxide doping where the athlete inhales carbon monoxide and the body produces more red blood cells to compensate, which helps in endurance sports.
Report lurka April 23, 2020 11:56 PM BST
They could actually try treating patients with epo, which also increases production of red blood cells, if there's anything to this study.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves April 24, 2020 12:38 AM BST
In the studies I read on this a week or two ago, former smokers were almost as well protected as current smokers.

I think I might have hit the sweet spot by smoking 20-a-day from age 18 to 26, then giving up after one disastrous afternoon at Devon & Exeter. When I got back to St David's station, I found I couldn't even afford a box of matches, never mind 10 Rothmans. Things were so bad, I had to look for a job again, and by the time one turned up, I found I'd given up by default.

But I may reap the benefits of those early years in the weeks to come.
Report lybertyne April 24, 2020 12:51 AM BST
smoking reduces oxygen in your blood and your body can be tricked into producing more red blood cells to compensate.

Carbon monoxide molecules from the smoke attaches to the red blood cells.  Those carrying a CO can't then pick up an oxygen molecule.  To compensate for this a smoker's body produces more red blood cells.  When someone suddenly stops smoking, all of their red blood cells can now pick up oxygen.  This is why people feel very light-headed when they stop smoking, because the brain is suddenly getting more oxygen than it needs.  It takes a few days for the body to realise it no longer needs the increased red blood cell production.  The light-headedness was the hardest thing for me to overcome.
Report lurka April 24, 2020 12:54 AM BST
Yes, and they'd effectively be stopping once admitted to hospital
Report lurka April 24, 2020 1:02 AM BST
Carbon monoxide levels can drop back to a normal level after about 12 hours without a cigarette, which means that first thing every morning a smoker could have a similar or even higher oxygen carrying capacity than a non-smoker, even if he lights up in the morning and doesn't quit at all.
Report UBLE/REGY April 24, 2020 1:30 AM BST
Of course the % of people who smoked, would have to be less than the % who smoke in our society.

To be meaningful
Report UBLE/REGY April 24, 2020 1:32 AM BST
I think?
Report lurka April 24, 2020 10:08 AM BST
White blood cells are the cells of the immune system which protect the body against infectious diseases. Smoking also causes an elevated level of white blood cells as your body is constantly fighting the effects of smoking. It is generally thought to have a negative effect on the immune system and to make the smoker more susceptible to diseases like flu and pneumonia though. But it also thought to increase the body's ability to fight certain inflammatory diseases and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimers.
