Three main choices I think: low carb hi fat, low fat high carb and Mediterranean.

Is the Mediterranean diet not the one predominately eaten in Italy, Spain and France?

Olives, nuts, fish, healthy oils?

Olives? What's the attraction? I love fruits but olives are so salty.

Yes, it is, but it's also the weather. Hi-carb low fat and vice versa are fad diets which haven't stood the test of time and I doubt many old people take any notice of them. Greece also has the Mediterranean diet.

How is a Med diet compare to a S Korean/Japanese diet eg veg/little meat/organic fish/steamed not fried? Is Med healthier? Is there such a thing as a healthy oil? Olive oil is still oil, and consumed in quantity is unhealthy too (surely); oil is oil similarly, sugar is sugar regardless if it's sugar from fruits or fruit juices or chocs.

In Greece and Italy some people drink a glass of olive oil and swear by it

Elsewhere a glass (or teaspoon) of Cod Liver Oil, and even a bottle of vodka eg Russia and Poland a day.

All true, but vitamin D from the sun and thus a more uplifting carefree attitude has to be a big factor.
