Just checked; Chinese confirmed human to human transmission on Jan 20th. Not sure how he calculates late Jan but it was clearly before then. So Johnson had two whole months between that confirmation and finally enacting a lockdown.

To be fair, he had to fit in an all-expenses (paid by?) trip to Mustique, every weekend off and also half term week off so this obviously cut down on his time to prepare. Oh and there was that dinner with wealthy Russian donors too. Priorities folks.

Burgon is obviously playing with figures to make a political point ... its no different to Johnson mssing 5 Cobra meetings & minister after minister coming on telly absolving him of any responsibility which is palpably nonsense .. there was a crisis loomung & he is in charge so should have been at the helm.
What is of concern is that you are not addressing the problem of the table of deaths ... we aren't the worst but we are nowhere near the BEST in terms of reducing the numbers. As a country we should have aspirations to being at the forefront of addressing this problem and that is done by a pro-active approach ... we did nothing until mid march when other countries had already imposed shutdowns of their economies
So the real criticism should be the failure to address concerns and the efforts to subdue our death totals and not the stupid tweets of someone not worthy of mention  .. Burgon can be ignored but the failure by the UK Government are definitely newsworthy and of concern to the wider public

Yes they are. Italy leaders rightly criticised for enforcing a resticted lockdown of northern Italy which simply saw everyone flee to the south and he had to make it total a couple of days later.

Macron was on national telly a week ago apologising for mistakes made.


We live in a democracy where our leaders actions need to be constantly checked and lessons learned to improve next time round.

We're over that already, so what exactly would be a bad outcome?

We should have locked down, and locked down hard. That would have helped.

Testing and tracing would have been a big thing, but years of underfunding left us woefully prepared for a pandemic and so we could not do it. They let it run loose in society hoping for the best.

Good point. Remiss of him just to include UK hospital deaths rather than total deaths like other countries.

Covid 19 has a mortality rate of about 1%.
There currently isn't a cure or vaccination so theoretically could kill 650,000 people in this country.
As long as the NHS isn't over run, this could still be the result.

There has to be an argument for the government response to this pandemic.
You can't have a total lockdown until a cure is found. Even if a cure was found how long would it take to vaccinate the nation.
As for testing and tracing. This is plausible with a small number of cases but as the virus doesn't show symptoms for 5 days you could pass it on to 100's and that's ignoring the asymptomatic.

It's easy to say the pandemic planning was poor.
How do you plan for something that might happen every 30, 50, 100 years?
Buy years supply of PPE ?. Buy 10x as many ventilators as you use ?.

Maybe Johnson understood that the UK wouldn't be able to sustain a lockdown for too long and held off until the optimum time for maximum impact. We could have done it earlier but the media are already agitating for lifting it now. Damned if he did and damned if he didn't. The time for all the Burgon analysis is in a clinical and factual public enquiry after this has finished,instead of taking valuable time and effort away from the current problem at hand.

Mr Johnson is off sick because he is stupid. If anyone has been damned it is those who have died especially health workers as a result of his and his Governments incompetence. It would appear his Medical Officers have caught his stupidity!

Perfectly put. We are Policed by consent in the main. Once there are breaches you have to enforce them all-not possible- or back off and look weak.

THerefore it wasn't the optimum time & the impact could have been lessened if the lockdown was introduced even 7 days earlier

Yep, the country started doing it itself and basically forced the govt to formalize it.

My employer sent us all home a week before the govt mandated it.

Now I'm not a fan of the far left at all, or a fan of after timing, but geordie is right.  And AFAIK there was only one politician who argued forcibly for an earlier lockdown at the time and that was Rory Stewart.

I don't recall any Labour politicians banging that drum, but that's not to say there weren't.  Perhaps someone can enlighten me?
