Hancock was just asked about it at a sub-committee meeting and repeatedly played a forward defensive. Yvette Cooper pushed him, but he maintained his straight bat.

They are asked to self isolate though, Hancock believes that is sufficient.

7 million key workers going to work...their kids freely mingling in school...everyone else free to go to the supermarket...and probably up to 3% of the population already infected.....honestly fella the horse has bolted, it might p!ss you off, but it really doesn't make any difference.

It's ridiculous a person in his position is this poor. So they fly in and get off a plane... what does he think they do magically get to where they are self isolating. As pretty sure there are no government buses taking them to an isolation place. They will get in a taxi, get on the tube etc. Not being funny but if these people are willing to fly at the moment I would imagine they are a higher risk of catching it. As there is no way at the moment you would get me in a hospital or on a plane, train or the tube by choice.

Being an island we were in one of the best positions to isolate and protect the virus coming in and spreading. Through poor government decisions we are going to be one of the worst effected in Europe if not the worst.

If the statistical probability of them having it is the same as the statistical probability of a person going into Tesco having it, it's unclear why anyone should get stressed about it. As said above (and I've said before) the horse has bolted. Long bolted. The horse has bolted and bred and become a herd of horses that then bred and became more herds of horses. Or whatever a lot of horses are called, that sounds wrong.

Anyway: If anything they shouldn't be tested AFTER they've got off a flight of X hours in an enclosed little box surrounded by other people and breathing into a recirculated air system. Any testing should be done BEFORE they board the plane, that would make 1000% more sense.

Psychologist was saying the other day people are reacting disproportionately (like shouting at groups of > 2 people or someone sunbathing) as they feel a lack of control of the entire situation and want to find at least something they can control and then focus on that, even if it doesn't help. Just saying.

Complete and utter juan kerrs...madness!!.. highest death rate in Europe and keep sending in more infection!...
Report Cardinal Scott April 17, 2020 1:14 PM BST
I'll take note of what countries more successful at halting the spread are doing and they are testing airport arrivals Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong ....more evidence of this governments total incompetence.
Report sofiakenny April 17, 2020 1:15 PM BST
JC..so every other country is wrong and we are right to let them keep flooding in?..wise up man.
Report eyeball April 17, 2020 1:17 PM BST
Doesn't make sense . You can't walk round the corner to see your family but you can fly people in from all over the world to mix with a variety of people . No consistency .
Report Just Checking April 17, 2020 1:22 PM BST
I'd be totally for screening or testing BEFORE flights. That makes sense. After .. well say it's 300 people and 3 were infected and you catch 2 of them. They might have infected 10 more on the 3 hours over. People can be infectious days before they show symptoms, do the dodgy tests we have now even catch them? And 50% (and maybe a lot more) don't even show symptoms. Don't see much point on sticking a thermometer on them AFTER they arrive.
Report politicspunter April 17, 2020 1:24 PM BST
This has been brought up many times on here. Effectively, it is open house for every country to come here, virus riddled or not. Don't worry, we won't check if you have it or not.
Report sofiakenny April 17, 2020 1:25 PM BST
Its simple..every arrival must self isolate for 14 days at a state monitored facility..eg New Zealand.
Report Cardinal Scott April 17, 2020 1:27 PM BST
Apparently Yachts are bound for Blighty in unusual high numbers too because they are not allowed to enter ports anywhere in Mediterranean.

Some people seem to still be in the mindset we are trying to stop this and if we try a bit harder, one extra push, we'll manage. We aren't. We are putting measures in place to keep the progress at a manageable level, same as other countries.

It's understandable when the uk has > 100,000 confirmed cases and the real figure may be 500,000, 1 million, maybe more, that worrying about a bloke on yacht having it is a spot of very small beer that the authorities don't really give a **** about.

tbh the infection needs speeding up a touch...first country to get to 70% wins and wins big

So was Trump wrong to ban flights from China and Europe ?

Report Eric.Cartman April 17, 2020 1:44 PM BST
governments have to be seen to be doing something...no matter how pointless
Report lurka April 17, 2020 1:45 PM BST
It is correct that the effectiveness of a travel ban inwards is massively reduced once the spread has got out of hand. It would still be effective to some extent, but nowhere near as effective as if it were done in February.

The TDR continues.
Report lurka April 17, 2020 1:49 PM BST
The main advantage of an early travel ban is that you can put all of your resources into testing and tracking cases, ie finding them quicker than they are spreading and getting on top of them and stopping the spread almost completely once you have done that. That's what the Asians did, but you only have a very small window of time to do that, otherwise you are into the curve trjectory. It's far too late for that now. You don't have the resources to test and track all cases once you are on the curve trajectory.
Report politicspunter April 17, 2020 1:52 PM BST

I've been saying for weeks it's herd immunity by stealth
Considering that the death rate is very low, we should achieve that before most other countries
The government are doing a sterling job at present
