RIP - Norman Hunter !

He was part of the 1966 FIFA World Cup winning squad, receiving a winner's medal in 2007.[4] He was the first winner of the PFA Players' Player of the Year award in 1974, and was included in the Football League 100 Legends.

A tough tackling centre-half and defensive midfielder, he was nicknamed "Bites Yer Legs" Hunter. The nickname originated from a banner held up by Leeds United fans at the 1972 FA Cup Final against Arsenal; the banner simply read "Norman bites yer legs".[5]

He played 726 games in total for Leeds, scoring 21 goals.

very sad news,there was this story about how he got injured in a match and the manager phoned his wife to say just to warn you that norman is coming back with a bit of a leg and his wife said 'whose'

One of my first heroes except for the time when he missed the Polish winger on the half way line at Wembley.

Hunter turned to the after-dinner circuit recounting his anecdotes, and from 1993 to 2020 he worked for local station BBC Radio Leeds and Yorkshire Radio as a summariser at Leeds games.[31]

In 1998, the Football League, as part of its centenary season celebrations, included Hunter on its list of 100 League Legends.[32]

Hunter released his autobiography, Biting Talk, in 2004.[33]

In the 1966 World Cup final only the 11 players on the pitch at the end of the 4–2 win over West Germany received medals. Following a Football Association-led campaign to persuade FIFA to award medals to all the squad members, Hunter was presented with his winner's medal by Gordon Brown at a ceremony at 10 Downing Street on 10 June 2009.[34]

Hunter retained close links with Leeds United and its fans, and regularly appeared at Leeds matches and figured at club-hosted conferences and events; the eponymous "Norman Hunter Suite" is located in the West Stand at Elland Road.[35]

In April 2020, it was reported that Hunter was being treated in hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.[6] On 16 April he was described as being “severely unwell”.[36] The following day, Leeds United announced that, as a result of the virus, Hunter had died.[37]

It was just one of those nights when they did everything but score,shouldn’t be remembered for a defensive mistake when they should have scored 3 or 4.

My eyes got moist when Sunderland (my Dad's team) beat us (Leeds) in the 1971 Cup Final.

theres tv footage could have been midweek afternoon game due to power cuts, where leeds against Southampton I think play keep ball, ole,ole, not keep ball .like today sideways ,backwards but back heels,fancy flicks,keepy uppies etc, bit of a pish take really ,but probably best keep ball of all time

You would have got big odds against Keegan turning out to be the one to land an effective blow on the bonny little git.

Alan Clarke (sniffer) was my favourite player....I looked a little like him...some people have said....he had some great skills.

the leeds fans used to have a banner with the words "norman bites yers legs " ........millwall had a defender around the same time tony hazell and their  banner had the words "hazell bites yer nuts " great times for me as a nipper living in south london at the old den ,cant remember ever paying to get in. the challenge was to find ways to evade the coppers and get in over the wall .

My Uncle Mick an Auntie Pat lived in New Cross, around the corner from Cold Blow Lane. They were living in fear through the summer of 1974, after Man Utd got relegated.

The Millwall v Man Utd fixture was scheduled for September. Doors and gates were locked, windows boarded up, lights extinguished. And ... nothing happened. United's support simply didn't turn up.

its not the mad tackles ,size of someone that makes them known as hard within the game ,plenty at leeds will tell you it was johnny giles who was the hard man, same era peter storey at arsenal,grahme souness

Peter Lorimer had The Commercial in Holbeck.

It was actually Johnny Giles who initially punched Keegan in the face in the Charity Shield.

Still think Keegan was right to single out Bremner for the retaliation though.
