Good move IMP , robbing basterds the lot of them , as of yet to make a claim in nearly 40 years of driving ,Premiums still high
To cover the uinsured W@nkers |

That's 10% for the whole year presumably, so two months would be about eight quid. Many would apply an admin charge so it could end up costing you.

I thought it's only right as my car if off the road during this period. And, given season ticket holders using public transport, gym membership, etc are getting a refund on the unused portion of their ticket/membership why not my insurance company. The average vehicle cost about £500 per annum to insure; young drivers as much as £2500 (vehicle dependent).

Cider where are you getting the 8 quid figure ?

50/6

Cider, who are you with..£8? I'm paying £520 or £50 for a 5wk lockdown.
|
|
By:
You said a £50 refund. Pro rata that's £4 odd a month. I'm assuming after the lock down you would need to restore the policy of course. Nobody knows how long it will last of course, I just used two months for an example.

Yes I pay 400 , but Cider may have a point regarding Admin Charge ..

I am trying to suspend my car insurance as I am self isolating for 12 weeks and who knows how long this will go on ...nobody can give me an answer when I ring up ..I have snet an e-mail but no reply ….just a set of t..ts

I do not think admin fee is applicable given we are in a national emergency. A 12 week isolation is 12/52 x £400 = £92 (a tidy sum). I think I was charged £25 once for a slight alteration on the policy - I was livid.
Overdraft, monthly credit card payment, gym membership, etc, all have allowed a 3 month holiday (if one applies) thus why not vehicle insurance when vehicle is not in use. |
|
By:
£25 *2.
It's not straight forward for car insurance as people still need theft cover (not S&D obviously if in the 12 week full shielding) If you're in the very vulnerable group it may just be worth it, though I suspect you thought you were getting the £50 back for five weeks, from your OP ![]() |

By:
I think insurance companies could at least consider giving an additional period of cover in line with lockdown if a refund is not forthcoming. And, if I was self-isolating for 3 months I might even apply for SORN.
|
|
By:
Motor claims should be radically reduced for sure. But many people will still be driving, and all will want theft cover.

By:
Imagine one owns a delivery vehicle for non-essential goods eg white goods for household/furniture, etc. The insurance and car tax costs are humongous.
|
|
By:
What I meant was to suspend payments but still be insured ...I don't really think that is a big ask ...council tax payments can be suspended but will added on at the end ...but I cant imagine that insurance companies will be as accommodating ...they do love an admin charge
|
|
By:
Just a quick add on ...do you know if you put down you are unemployed it costs you more than if you are employed for car insurance ..this ap

Applies to a lot of jobs ...say any office job is cheaper
|
|
By:
Definitely for you Scamp it is worthwhile suspending. As long as you can bare the theft risk.
In regard to employment, it's down to the algorithms. They can be pretty random at times. |

By:
not sure its worth it for the average person and they are likely to black list ( be less generous for quotes)you for the renewal next year- legally they shouldn't but in car insurance where if someone smashes into you, you are the victim and your own premium goes up anything goes. If the insurance is suspended, presumably the no year claims date gets put back as well and with inevitable admin charges hardly seems worth the hassle unless maybe you are stuck in for months and months
|
|
By:
Suspension shouldn't have negatives on premiums. NCB requirements will align with the suspension.
|
|
By:
I think we are talking specifically about the period of lockdown when the vehicle/car is not in use or not used for it's insured for; fewer cars on the road/lesser usage = lesser claims - other factors being equal. As some companies also factor in frequency of usage in determining premium eg the higher the mileage per annum, the higher the premium I believe a refund or an additional period of insurance in line with period of lockdown is justified.

I appreciate the point, it's something I weighed up when the lock down was originally initiated. In most cases it won't be viable for most people. As most will still require a level of cover, would suffer multiple admin charges and only impact upon a portion of the year.
