And of course it's .. herd immunity. Basically keep the vulnerable inside, infect the young, and others wear face masks to keep the rate manageable.

Seems a possible solution and not spending our time trying to play the blame game on your favourite hate figures while hoping it goes away by itself, as our economies turn to the stone age and we build up social issues that will make the 30s seem like a boom. I know it uses the Herd word, pavlovian grauniad readers may not want to read it.

See earlier thread from someone else who also had no direct responsibility for saving lives.

It is for the insane to suggest using any human life as disposable.

We would have been much better prepared had we locked down earlier but clearly the government were frightened that they couldn't manage to take the dimwitted element of the public with them. We are now playing catch up because of a delayed response and the irresponsibility of members of the public who think they can do what they like with no consequences.

That slow initial response including making a mess of the testing have been the big issues.

I'll repeat paragraph 3.
"Seems a possible solution and not spending our time trying to play the blame game on your favourite hate figures while hoping it goes away by itself, as our economies turn to the stone age and we build up social issues that will make the 30s seem like a boom. And of course it's a german scientist referring to all of us including and indeed you'd think speifically "handled it so well and has more tests than an MOT Centre Germany".

Been saying for a while now that the UK have been using herd immunity by stealth
Particularly vague about essential workers on purpose, and allowing a significant amount of flights in from hotspots.

1. Article talks about German response and discusses it and plan for German exit strategy with German scientist, that would also work here.
2. Pavlovian responses "Tories bad". Jesus wept.

To be fair to the government, in that very first statement when they first rolled out the boffins, this is exactly what they said along with some horrific figures. The public as well as most politicians rightly couldn't stomach this so we went for option 2, lockdown. This was always gonna be a temporary fix and never a solution but to be fair its probably bought a bit of time so at least we now know a little more about covid-19. They no easy solution, you can't plan for a vaccine that may never turn up. Apart from locking down a bit earlier and a few logistical problems which is easy with hindsight to get on your high horse about, i doubt there's much more a government can do. Right from the start it seemed that this was something that most of us were gonna catch and hopefully come through. I'm not even sure how effective any treatment is...the death figures for those who end up on ventilators are grim.

I think the attitudes and "thinking" taken by some in this crisis exposes why that Communist pillock still managed to get a double figure vote share, instead of the deserved 0..

There was a study the other day where they tested people in a town in Germany and found far more people had been infected and hadn't known it (than was thought). I think the figure was 5x higher. That would mean the death rate is far lower than expected, which is very good news.

Priti does an absolutely superb press conference informing and inspiring the nation.

And what do the morons on Twitter and here do?

Pick up one thing and run with it. Why? Because the rest of the press conference was superb so they have nothing else to moan about.

(Most of these same morons cannot not even spell her name.)

Juce - mutation isn't as scary as it sounds.

All RNA viruses mutate. COVID-19 is mutating now.

Seasonal flu mutates and does so faster than COVID-19. A mutated form of the virus is likely to become LESS aggressive. Also, mutation probably doesn't prevent us from developing a short to medium term immunity nor does it mean we can't produce a vaccine.

Yeh I was thinking worse case scenario where after all that effort herd immunity isn't obtained.
Should be ok, as you say these mutations normally make it weaker not stronger

I'm sure that's true and seen as the UK hasn't had a total lockdown it should reach immunity quicker than other countries

jucel I've a related theory as to why Spanish Flu just disappeared .. far more people were infected without symptoms than they realised, they didn't have the means to test back then, herd immunity kicked in, and it was gone. It makes sense, the "mutated itself away" doesn't make ense.
