As at 10 April, there have been almost 1.7M recorded cases of COVID-19 recorded across 210 countries and territories. These have resulted in 102k deaths to date. 1.2M cases remain active.
Europe has recorded 819k of these cases (48%), with 70k deaths (68%). Italy, Spain, France, Germany and the UK account for 76% of the total European cases to date, but 86% of the deaths.
The progression in the growth of deaths, as measured from the day of the 100th death, is very similar for Italy, France, and the UK. Spain’s progression is significantly higher, whilst Germany is experiencing a much slower progression.
Italy As At 10 April : Recorded Cases 147,577, Recorded Deaths 18,849
Italy had a total of 1,128 cases prior to March, but experienced 9,021 cases in the next ten days , or 902 per day. This daily average rose to 3,687 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 5,343 in the last eleven days of the month.
However, the daily average has fallen to 4,179 in the first ten days of April, suggesting that the country has passed the peak rise in new infections.
29 deaths were reported prior to March, but a further 602 were recorded in the next ten days, or 60 per day. This daily average rose to 340 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 763 in the last eleven days of the month.
However, the daily average has fallen to 642 in the first ten days of April.
Italy has been providing data for the number of recovered cases, allowing a death rate to be calculated for completed cases. The rolling death rate at the measure points has been 37%, 39%, 44%, 44%, and 38%.
Italy has 98,273 active cases, a death rate of 38% would result in a further 37,344 deaths.
Spain As At 10 April : Recorded Cases 158,273, Recorded Deaths 16,081
Spain had a total of 58 cases prior to March, but experienced 1,637 cases in the next ten days , or 164 per day. This daily average rose to 1,988 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 6,759 in the last eleven days of the month.
However, the daily average has fallen to 6,235 in the first ten days of April, tentatively suggesting that the country has passed the peak rise in new infections.
No deaths were reported prior to March, but 36 were recorded in the next ten days, or 4 per day. This daily average rose to 106 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 670 in the last eleven days of the month.
The daily average has continued to rise, reaching 762 in the first ten days of April. Spain has been providing data for the number of recovered cases, allowing a death rate to be calculated for completed cases. The rolling death rate at the measure points has been 0%, 21%, 41%, 31%, and 22%.
Spain has 86,524 active cases, a death rate of 22% would result in a further 19,035 deaths.
France As At 10 April : Recorded Cases 124,869, Recorded Deaths 13,197
France had a total of 100 cases prior to March, but experienced 1,684 cases in the next ten days , or 168 per day. This daily average rose to 1,083 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 3,592 in the last eleven days of the month.
The daily average has risen further to 7,274 in the first ten days of April. However, this period includes significant adjustments for cases recorded in care homes that have not been redistributed to the days on which they were detected.
There is no evidence to suggest that France has yet passed the peak rise in daily infections.
2 deaths were reported prior to March, but a further 31 were recorded in the next ten days, or 3 per day. This daily average rose to 42 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 279 in the last eleven days of the month.
The daily average has continued to rise, reaching 967 in the first ten days of April. However, this period includes significant adjustments for cases recorded in care homes that have not been redistributed to the days on which they were detected.
France has been providing data for the number of recovered cases, allowing a death rate to be calculated for completed cases. The rolling death rate at the measure points has been 14%, 73%, 22%, 27%, and 35%.
France has 86,740 active cases, a death rate of 35% would result in a further 30,359 deaths.
United Kingdom
As At 10 April : Recorded Cases 73,758, Recorded Deaths 8,958
The UK had a total of 23 cases prior to March, but experienced 360 cases in the next ten days , or 36 per day. This daily average rose to 360 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 1,980 in the last eleven days of the month.
The daily average has risen significantly to 4,799 in the first ten days of April.
To date, 256,605 tests have been performed, with a daily average of 11,342 in the first ten days of April. However, there is a stated ambition of achieving 100k tests per day by the end of the month.
No deaths were reported prior to March, but 6 were recorded in the next ten days, or an average of 1 per day. This daily average rose to 17 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 147 in the last eleven days of the month.
The daily average has continued to rise, accelerating to 717 in the first ten days of April.
The UK was initially providing data for the number of recovered cases, but this was discontinued after 23 March. As such, we do not know the number of active cases thus cannot calculate a death rate for completed cases.
Germany
As At 10 April : Recorded Cases 121,045, Recorded Deaths 2,728
Germany had a total of 79 cases prior to March, but experienced 1,486 cases in the next ten days , or 149 per day. This daily average rose to 1,828 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 4,724 in the last eleven days of the month.
The daily average has risen slightly to 4,924 in the first ten days of April.
No deaths were reported prior to March, but 2 were recorded in the next ten days, or an average of 0 per day. This daily average rose to 7 between March 11 & 20, further rising to 64 in the last eleven days of the month.
The daily average has continued to rise, accelerating to 195 in the first ten days of April.
Germany has been providing data for the number of recovered cases, allowing a death rate to be calculated for completed cases. The rolling death rate at the measure points has been 0%, 10%, 27%, 5%, and 5%.
Germany has 64,404 active cases, a death rate of 5% would result in a further 3,220 deaths.

Fast forward to April 10, and there have been 1.7M recorded cases of COVID-19 globally. 503k of these (30%) have been recorded in the United States.
The US has a population of around 330M, almost five times bigger than the UK, but very similar to the five largest European countries at 324M.
To date, 18,747 deaths have been reported in the US, just 102 fewer than in Italy.
The US is currently reporting 457k active cases, adding 31k per day during April, and is suffering a death rate of 41%.

Italy - Further evidence that they have passed their peak of new daily infections. Average now at 3,516 per day, down from the peak of 5,343 per day. A similair trend can de seen for daily deaths, currently averaging 559, down from the peak of 763.
Spain - Similair trends to Italy for new daily cases, daily average continues to fall, currently 4,477, peak was 6,759. Daily deaths now beginning to fall, currently averaging 546, down from the peak of 762.
France - The French data is more difficult to interpret, there was a significant catch up in their figures in April P1 to include backdated cases and deaths in care homes. Current daily average for new cases is 4,599, daily deaths averaging 794.
UK - UK data not yet showing a decline from a peak, currently daily average of new cases is 4,944, up from the first ten days of April when it ran at 4,799. Average daily deaths also continuing to rise, current average of 782 up from prior period of 717.
Germany - Evidence emerging that Germany is declining from a peak of new cases, current daily average of 2,516 has halved from the prior period figure of 5,036. The number of reported daily deaths is currently 214, slightly up from the prior period figure of 196.
