I'm currently on a one man crusade, to scupper the "Selby Monday Market" which is confirmed as going ahead, in defiance of every single government instruction!
.
http://selbytowncouncil.gov.uk/c/markets/

Just imagine throngs of idiots, shoulder to shoulder, and standing at stalls, just an arm length fro the traders!

Traders and visitors from far and wide, and more than a good chance of infected people!

I didn't discover this until Friday, so a bit late for wrangling with the council, but I now have our local MP,
and BBC news on the case.

It is, in my view, a criminal move by 'Selby Town Council' and heaven knows of the damage it will do!

I'm just hoping that would be visitors will see sense and not travel, and that the police will enjoy turning people away when the arrive at the car park which, coincidentally, is next to the police station!"

As long as they implement social distancing and only local people attend there's no rule breaking. It's no riskier than a supermarket or warehouses, factories, construction sites, call centres and other workplaces that are allowed to stay open.
Report impossible123 April 12, 2020 3:21 PM BST
Would the market contravene the advice of NHS staff and government ie stay at home? If so, bin it for the time being until further notice. It's just another distraction the public could do without to venture out unnecessarily. There are so many alternatives eg supermarkets/corner shops, etc.

Irresponsible to me, and money before health.
Report blank April 12, 2020 3:58 PM BST
No it sells food like fresh fruit and veg. The more places selling food the safer we are as it reduces crowding in supermarkets and corner shops.

I don't think it applies to this market but the government have already made trade-offs with the economy and health. They could close all non-essential workplaces like some other countries but they haven't, it's hard to justify being allowed to go to factories and warehouses but not parks.

I must be missing something here!

The list of government 'instructions' is comprehensive and shouldn't be open to interpretation.

Shops, restaurants, cinemas, bowling alleys, my barbers and the entire 'Lake District' out of bounds,
and yet it's ok to have a market!

We are not looking at a wholesome market, in the French, Italian, German style here!
Fruit and veg sellers are thin on the ground, and there is an excellent, full time green grocer, in amongst this!

Selby market is where you go to buy an anorak, underwear, dog and cat baskets, cheap toys etc....
btw I only know such, as often walk past between the car park/Morrisons, and the bank, post office or my dentist etc!

The only things I ever bought there, are enormous prawns, that the fish monger from Grimsby, used to get for me at £25.00 a time.
Unfortunately we fell out, as I forgot one time (I paid him anyway) and was too late (he left early) a second time!

Greater Manchester police have apologised after a man who said he was delivering food to vulnerable family members was arrested and threatened with pepper spray.

In video footage of the incident, which took place in Fallowfield, Manchester, on Friday, the man can be seen refusing to give police his details after being accused of “breaking Covid guidelines”.

“Give me a ticket for what?” the man says to the officer. “You’re a bored guy. There’s groups of people all over the place.”

The footage, which was filmed by a neighbour, shows the officer repeatedly threatening the man with pepper spray, handcuffing him and telling him to lean against a car.

“Put your hands on your head or you’re going to get sprayed,” the officer can be heard saying. “Put your hands behind your back.”

“You just keep saying things over and over,” replies the man. “You’re not helping, you’re not diluting the situation, you’re making it worse. Because I come to drop some stuff off.” He complains that the officer has twisted the handcuffs, causing him pain.

A woman can be heard telling the officer: “In the current situation, in the current pandemic, there’s more pressing situations to be dealing with than coming over and bothering somebody going about his business on his own.” The officer tells her: “Listen ... you’ll be next.”

There has been criticism that some police forces are overreaching their lockdown enforcement powers. The Guardian learned on Thursday that police chiefs wanted the government to consider toughening the restrictions, as the Easter bank holiday weekend approached. On Saturday, the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, Martin Hewitt, said police from 37 forces in England and Wales had issued 1,084 fines for breaches of coronavirus regulations as of Thursday, but the number of arrests was unclear.

Greater Manchester police apologised and said that a senior member of the force was speaking to the man and his family.

“Although the matter is being investigated fully by our professional standards branch, our initial review shows that the incident wasn’t dealt with in the professional way we would expect and we apologise for that,” a spokesperson said.

“The public rightly expect the highest standards from our officers and we will investigate this matter thoroughly and properly. We would ask that the public understand the stresses that our officers are working under at present and we hope this apology will be welcome to those involved.”

It is understood the man was arrested under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and then de-arrested and issued with a fixed penalty notice.

Is a slight concern they could be spreading the virus going around in groups in cars etc not applying social distancing rules. They seem to have some PPE but do not use it. In that video gloves were put on after entering the building.

Also some shocking footage from outside Bristol hospital of NHS workers, public and police clapping last week with no social distancing at all. If NHS staff and police did not bother with the rules it makes it harder to enforce them on the general population...

Yeah, Plod are great these days.....

Some of this was revealed in a little-noticed report by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary, which went on to deliver some even more shocking news. Nearly half of 17,200 officers and staff surveyed said that if they discovered corruption among their colleagues and chose to report it, they didn’t believe their evidence would be treated in confidence and would fear ‘adverse consequences’.

The second report, compiled by the Serious Organised Crime Agency, bears this out. It says there has been a sharp increase over the past five years in the number of police officers dealing heroin, cocaine and amphetamines and an equally startling rise in the number of officers abusing their power ‘for sexual gratification’ — in other words bullying or cajoling suspects, witnesses and even victims into having sex with them.

Just this week, in fact, it emerged that the Met suspended 73 coppers, community support officers and other staff on corruption charges in the past two years. They cited drug crimes, bribery, theft, fraud, sexual misconduct and — everybody’s favourite — un-authorised disclosure of information. Eleven were convicted in court, but what happened to the others? The Met spokesman said rather blandly that some were allowed to resign or retire (presumably with full pension rights) and some were dismissed.

Police have admitted a second wrongful conviction under new coronavirus laws, as several cases are reviewed.

The 21-year-old man was arrested outside a leisure centre in Tooting, south-west London, on 28 March.

He was charged with violating schedule 21 of the Coronavirus Act 2020, which only applies to “potentially infectious persons” and was intended to support quarantine measures.

The same law was used in the first wrongful conviction known since the start of the UK’s lockdown, of a woman who was fined £660 after “loitering” at a railway station.

Her conviction was quashed after lawyers and journalists at The Independent and The Times raised concern.

The latest case was overturned after the Press Association agency questioned the Metropolitan Police about how the law had been applied in London magistrates' court cases.
