He was on sky news earlier talking about a potential ban on exercise if a small minority continue to fail to adhere to social isolation policy. Unless you're in prison, it's the fundamental right of any human being to get fresh air and expecting healthy people to be holed up like convicts in order to protect a small percentage of vulnerable people who should be indoors anyway is absurd. It's one thing asking people to limit going outside once a day but banning it completely will damage the health of the majority of people over a sustained period and how anyone living in a high rise flat with kids for eg is supposed to cope I've no idea without serious damage to their mental/physical well being.

Use public transport sparingly - ok
Don’t work within 2 metres of each other - ok

Don’t exercise in the fresh air. - up yours.

If you had a lung condition that was exacerbated by petrol fumes causing potentially fatal issues Geordie would you demand people on your road sell their cars? I dont agree with groups socialising in these times but there is also an onus on people with health issues to protect themselves as well not expecting everyones life to come to an end accommodating them

real leadership by a health sec would be to say you can go without exercise for a few weeks, months like their doing in itzaly, spain etc

this could be an all out war developing between the exercisers and the sunbathers  ...

the sunbathers will make gains as the spring goes on and possibly outnumber the exercisers in time ...  worrying scenes ...exercisers will  blame the sunbathers for sure

although the sunbathers not happy being lumped together with the covidiots who seem to be smaller in number

the sunbathers seem to be social distancing  and actually less of a risk than the exercisers

The flexing of establishment muscles is obscene. Plod loving their new powers to be killjoys.

This virus certainly ticks all the boxes.....

Can be asymptomatic but still contagious
Can be asymptomatic for 14 days THEN develop symptoms
Affects people differently
Is so contagious going for 2 walks a day endangers life
Is so mild most people don’t know they have had it

Is so lethal it spreads  by people walking in the Lake District or on beaches in any weather.
Lives on surfaces for 3 days
Is so mild we’ll keep the tube open despite social distancing being impossible

I mean we've had about 3 weeks of CONSTANT explanations as to why a mask is relevant in some situations, why for example a surgeon might wear one (and it was never so he wouldn't catch a disease himself), so anyone with any sense should have picked it up, but I'm interested on your take.

Is it for conspiracy reasons?

I'd like some definitive answer from a qualified medicalprofessional on whether wearing a mask in public is vital.
If there is one provide a link and we all do it. It's not a hardship.
Report Fire-and-Ice April 5, 2020 1:07 PM BST
Not wearing a mask in public if made legal would be so easy to police
The fineable would be easier to spot/punish and if no coppers are around then mask wearers could set about the clean mouthed with impunity.

Oh I thought you could enlighten me JC!

I’ve looked at the studies which are inconclusive. Decent article here for example . https://time.com/5815251/should-you-wear-a-mask-coronavirus/

Juce’s  point is a good one but masks can still be sourced and homemade is also possible.

The advice is stay at home. Why? To not spread nor contract the virus. Most are doing this. When we venture out most are keeping their distance. Surely though a mask would be an added protection when we do go out for food, work or our exercise? It may not guarantee our safety but it must help by at least a few percent. It’s all about the droplets from our breath. Anything to protect our mouth and also eyes must help.

Some say it lowers inhibitions making us more careless. I think the opposite. It reinforces the ‘stay away from me’ message.
Report jucel69 April 5, 2020 1:13 PM BST
Shops here are still fully stocked with all food so that's one good aspect
Report jucel69 April 5, 2020 1:14 PM BST
Also we touch our mouth, nose a lot subconsciously so it stops that too
I also wear sunglasses all the time

"It reinforces the ‘stay away from me’ message."

I just do this by loudly garbling nonsense about 5G wherever I go, and then giving them a death stare if they are mad enough to make eye contact.

Works for me :)
Yours,
Just Wormood Scrubs

But seriously: All the "evidence" is masks help stop spreading a lot, but not so much taking it in.
I've a few DIY masks around but don't bother.
Report Dotchinite April 5, 2020 1:22 PM BST
Hancock is an idiot. Theres no way people are going to stop their exercise. I certainly wont.
Report impossible123 April 5, 2020 1:23 PM BST
I think the main reason wearing a mask in public is not advised is because there's already a shortage of that for key NHS workers without the public joining the customer/user chain. Another is it could induce a false security for wearers eg going out more, and animosity towards those without or not doing so for specific health reasons.

But, neither will beat the advice of staying at home ie you cannot infect and you cannot contract, if so.

Maybe cling-film ones face and mouth. and breath thro' a tube strategically attached, wearer dependent or accordingly.
Report Injera April 5, 2020 1:30 PM BST
The public have been absolutely superb. Work has virtually stopped. Nearly all shops are shut. Trains, buses and tube have seen a massive fall in usage.

No pubs, cafes or restaurants open. No sport.

Spying on walkers or picnickers isn’t going to make a jot of difference compared with the above.

biggest craze in uk are beards,stubble,3/4 day growth all of which prohibit you from getting a properly sealed fit of a facemask, wonder if dr,s /nhs workers get a face fitting cert whilst sporting facial hair, your normaly told the day before fitting test to be clean shaven, rather deveats the object if soon as you have your cert to grow facial hair again, its quite disorientating doing a proper test breath in and out heavily, for a few  min, count to 120 etc, etc, move your head side to side,up and down etc,etc
Report impossible123 April 5, 2020 1:52 PM BST
When will we ever get the government paying for 80% of time-off work (plus 20% for the fortunate ones) and mortgage holiday, free overdraft and temporary freeze of loans and credit cards payments for the next 3 months? Some have never had it better, and with the lovely weather the greedy, stupid and foolish will welcome with open arms.

As the peak is approaching I believe staying at home is the best strategic policy; exercising need not be outside the house/flat with or without a garden at this juncture - one cannot be too careful.

Take the advice from NHS workers eg nurses, medics, police and care home personnel.
Report Dotchinite April 5, 2020 2:03 PM BST
