I'm curious how you do it. I made up a list of what appeared on first glance to be suitable songs and artists, some of them I had an idea of a clue I wanted to use straight away but in the main made up the clues afterwards.

That's precisely how I do it Squares. I just go through songs of each era and whilst browsing I think of clues. If I can't think of one quickly I move onto the next the next one until I find something that fits. As for the follow-up clues, same as you, I make it up as I go along.
