We know the virus kills mainly the elderly and with grave health issues but when you see Charles/ Boris etc who are hardly spring chickens perfectly healthy having recovered it does reduce the fear factor somewhat. It was on the news today a 36 year old died with no apparent health conditions- its that rare it makes the news. How many will die due to being made homeless with lost jobs/ businesses etc or suffer serious health conditions with the fallout from all this economically.

There will come a time where the "cure " is worse than the disease
Report Angoose April 3, 2020 12:59 PM BST
But it is very difficult to define the cure when you remain unable to define the disease.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory disease of zoonotic origin that surfaced in the early 2000s caused by the first-identified strain of the SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV or SARS-CoV-1).

In late 2017, Chinese scientists traced the virus through the intermediary of civets to cave-dwelling horseshoe bats in Yunnan province.

No cases of the first SARS-CoV have been reported worldwide since 2004.

In 2019, a related virus strain, SARS-CoV-2, was discovered. This new strain causes COVID-19, a disease which brought about the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic.

However, take a look at some basic data for SARS, MERS, and CODID-19.

    Virus        Cases        Deaths        Territories
    SARS 2002/3        8,096        774        28
    MERS 2012-20        1,360        527        26
    COVID-19        1,030,642        54,229        203

The scale of the current virus somewhat different.

Come on wolf, you're better than that.
Report Deplasterer April 3, 2020 1:16 PM BST
That maybe right Wolf re:2019 flu, but what some people are failing to understand is that in 2019 health care around the world we're not stretched to capacity like covid 19 is currently doing and we still haven't reached peak time yet, God help the front liners in the next 3 to 6 weeks.
Report wolf3011 April 3, 2020 1:26 PM BST
Angoose, you quote figures for SARs /MERs and then quote figures for Covid implying it's a far worse disease- maybe it is but the fact remains far more die from common flu per year.

I understand the governments caution with a virus that is new but as I said a few weeks ago, the acid test will be how many people in the public eye will contract the virus and then go on to die or be hospitalised. Despite a long list of well known people contracting the virus, virtually all have recovered bar very rare exceptions and sadly people like Eddie Large who lived up to his name in hospital with serious heart problems nearly 80 years old. Is the answer economic ruin with society effectively disintegrating over a virus that creates less risk to a healthy person under 60 to crossing a road?

Spreading the Virus over a 2 month period to try to level it out is all that can be done , Following that resrtictions will have to be lifted

The Virus will not be going away ..........What we meant to do stay Locked down  for a year ?

We will come to a point where the death rate will have to accepted ,if they can get it low enough , if they can get it to a level of around 500

a week for instance ,As stated the Flu has and will kill more ,I don't see the whole world in Lockdown over that ...

I believe planes are still arriving from the states ,I would imagine those arriving will not be staying in London unless medical staff

Where are they going to end up , Who are what are on these planes ????

Strange how we have stood by and watched Millions Die of Disease and famine over the years , Hundreds of thousands in desperate trouble in

Syria , But all of a Sudden Aunty Ada in her 80s Might die and the whole world goes into meltdown ............

I know there will be exceptional cases , thats Life ...

Spread it Treat it and get on with life .

For me, the most interesting comparison between SARS/MERS/COVID-19 is the number of countries where cases were reported.

This is truly a pandemic and it is not yet truly known why this strain has been able to spread so widely.
More information regarding how it spreads cntinues to be uncovered.

Opinions are changing regarding the 2 metre safe zone, it could possibly be 6 or even 8 metres.
Similairly, the time that droplests can remain in the air is now thought to be significnatly longer than previously believed.

So, until the disease is fully understood, it is difficult to determine the "cure".

Common sense to wear a mask. Government stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they tell the public to wear them, it will be more problematic for the N.H.S. There is a worldwide shortage.

With 2 more youngish nurses dying, it tells us something else. It seems you can ‘overdose’ with the virus. More exposure = a greater dose and danger..

Most seem to be getting a v mild dose. Tiny exposure, enough for mild symptoms and a quick recovery.
