Got a mate who work for a fire alarm maintenance company. 6 engineers and they have all been made furloughed so 80% wages from the government and the company making up the 20%.
Thing is they’ve been asked to cover emergency call outs. No mention of pay but is this allowed?

Another furlough question. (sorry for using same thread). Mate of mine on 80% wages but has been told he must use 10 days leave also in the time he is off. Is this legal?

That's what I thought mm, but they have received letters adjusting their contracts to incorporate this. A change in conditions.

the holiday thing def sounds illegal
if an employee is furloughed they cant work for company at all even covering emergency calls,
the government will argue that there is work and therefore some workers should not be furloughed
ie they should keep one or two in full time employment to cover this if required

farmers want clarification to see if they can hire furloughed workers on wages

It's very clear, furloughed employees are not allowed to work at all. The only exception is where the only employee is the director, they are allowed to carry out their officer duties whilst on furlough. The key point as noted above, not every employee is required to be furloughed.

My interpretation is that AL shouldn't be enforced if they are furloughed.

The company seems to be pulling a fast one using government as paymaster. Win, win situation and business is still functioning as normal, and government paying 80% of the wages.

Creative accounting springs to mind. I wonder what the taxmen will say on that post Covid-19. A case for reclamation perhaps.

Many small firms taking the ****.my mates son works for a small engineering compan, last week the boss told them they were on 80% wages but still had to come to work.this week they were told because business was poor he was reducing wages to 60%.anyone who didn’t accept it wouldn’t have a job when things get back to normal.as an aside his wife works as a carer for the elderly & she has said she darent go to work now in case she catches the virus from him while he’s still working in a busy environment.im sure this isn’t a one off, there’s gonna be retribution should thing turn really nasty.
