Only time ever heard it was in Bilko where he had a furlough so was going to Vegas and needed a scam in the barracks to finance his gambling/trip.

Ashley I have heard it several times during US Budget crises going through Congress

Quite often US Government workers are put on furlough when a budget cannot not be reached. I never really know what that meant. I am on furlough now though. Not sure I know what it means and have no idea how much or when I will get any money.

Yes, very much an American term, the land of "at will" employment contracts. Sad

Of course, it should NEVER be confused with furlong.

when corus 1st went belly up on Teesside in 2011 about 200 of us were kept on with government money doing training, whilst they looked for a buyer, and they hoped to use it as a blueprint for future work closures ,and they called as A SKILLS RETENTION plan, didnt suit everyone because you only got 1200 a month 4/500 down on normal monthly basic wage, most took chance of getting redundo package and most got back when SSI bought it,if they wanted to come back, I did it because I could manage and thought I always had the redundo package in my back pocket but when ssi did a runner I only got the basic government redundo package cost me about 18 grand, but got4 4 years work with SSI out of it
