How many of those who have passed away , were in hospital already prior to catching the Virus ??

Are there any figures on that ?

I think when this is over people will be shocked at what percentage of the deaths were people who were going to die over the next few months anyway.

no they wont and they,ll be just as shocked next year if 20,000 people die of so called normal flu in a 4/5 week period rather than it be spread over 4/5 months

If somebody is diagnosed with COVID-19 and is knocked down and killed by a bus are they included in the COVID-19 statistics as a 'victim' ?

The measure of success/failure won't be the number of people who died who would have died within 12 months
It will be
The number of people alive in March 2021 who would otherwise be dead.

That is where the difference between 200,000 deaths (don't do much) & 20,000 (social distancing) comes from.
It is the unknown 180,000 people the government (& most citizens) are trying to protect.

Mexico. Yes I agree with that is how success/failure is measured but even 200,000 deaths blamed on coronovairus would need to be taken in context of an annual death rate of around 600K as even at that level most could have been in their final year.

It just appears at present that most deaths are with people with "underlying health risks" or the very old. At some point people are going to need to weigh up the economic cost of keeping the economy shut down. Thats the blunt truth that nobody seems to want to address.

The charitable sector which is essential to this country will take a monumental hit.

Those with underlying health conditions could have lived for years, same also for somebody who is 60/65/70 years old.

Yep those healthy & under 40 years have a low chance of dying (although some will need some medical aid). That still leaves millions of people. Some of these older people may just need 3 days of oxygen and a week of rest. There is concern these people won't be able to get 3 days of oxygen.

Also the economy would still be massively hit if we basically did nothing.
Which countries would allow holiday flights full of Covid Brits landing at their airports.

Life assurance companies may still need a bailout or at least will go to courts if government not trying to protect lives.

The rest of the planet is pretty much doing the same regarding social distancing. It is hardly a massive sacrifice to stay at home & help the medical profession.

Mexico im not disagreeing as such. I dont know the answers anymore than anyone else here and all I suggested was that people might be shocked when this is over and each death is analysed to find out which percentage were likely to have died soon afterwards. I could be wrong and it may be that many victims could be 60 year old diabetics who may have lived another 20 years.

Fuller information from the Government about the victims would stop the speculation wouldnt it.

OH ive no problem with the current social distancing rules. But we need a grown up debate if this continues about how much damage we do to our economy.

How do you achieve a "grown up debate" within a political system where it is standard practice to fail to answer basic questions?

Angoose. We need a grown up debate but I dont expect to get one. Your post provides one of many reasons why we wont.

The view is basically that that debate comes in a few months time when we decide to to repay the debt . Do we cut spending? Do we raise taxes? Do we let the next generation worry about the debt.

Plenty of years (& elections) for grown up debate. What we will never know is how much damage we would have done to the economy if we basically did f-all (I.e carry on working unless you are ill)

Sadly, we have an increasingly partisan society, too few people prepared to objectively listen and be informed by evidence.
