those that have had coronavirus and recovered from it demand to be allowed out of isolation and be able to go out freely where and when they want? Confused

Not sure all those in that position are going to sit out around happily isolating for 6 months for no personal, or seemingly wider benefit to society?

And if restrictions are removed for people that have recovered, how long before other people start thinking contracting the virus might not be a bad idea instead of isolating themselves indefinitely.

There may be bigger trouble ahead......

You're right on pretty much every point imho.

If people who've had it are definitely immune, they should be given some form of certification and allowed far more freedom.

Would make sense. If done with a light touch. As long as the process doesn't open up the door for an ID system and the Coronastappo checking our movements...

... Which given what I've read about some of the joyous embracing of a chance to push people around, I'm not so sure.

Aren't Germany looking at that? An anti-body test that can lead to the already infected getting some kind of certificate so they can return to normal life.

Would agree though on the potential downside of others feeling emboldened or jealous and it kicking off again.

I think there's always gonna be the risk of this and you just need to test massively and do proper contact tracing to isolate potential victims before it spreads.

You lift the restrictions for people who have had the virus and immune, and you will risk people actively trying to catch the virus.

Though with the herd immunity target, maybe that's what the government want anyway.

And if this happens, people with the antibodies will want pubs, restaurants etc. to reopen for people with the right paperwork.

What would be the cost to police this and indeed who would?

Businesses in bad need of cashflow are hardly going to turn away people with no paperwork.

The UK keeps repeating it, they want to limit the amount of people in hospital at any one time. My feeling is that once the spread is under control, they will begin to unwind the restrictions. Probably the 1.5M identified as being most at risk remaining shielded. Those that can keep wfh etc.

It would be absolute madness if say 30% of the people were immune to keep the entire country on lockdown and heading towards total economic ruin if the immunity target was say 60% and a vaccine was still 12 months away.

Question, and I'm just asking for my friend Viago.
Does anyone know if you can get immunity if you drink the blood of someone who has immunity?
Report Cider March 30, 2020 7:33 PM BST
In the UK anyway, they are trying to prevent the NHS from crumbling under the pressure, rather than eradicate the virus. As everyone will know, 8K people die from flu each year. It's highly likely that CV19 will be similarly with us for the foreseeable future.

The problem with isolating people for more than six weeks and having Coronavirus news on 24/7,is that people will get sick of the media and say enough is enough.
This isolation will cause more deaths , destitution, suicide and Mental health problems than the virus itself.many people i know, (and don't kmow) are already saying that,
this country isn't use to Lockdown, if its for a few weeks, then the govt will probably get away with it, but any longer, there could be serious consequencies,
Its not Boris i blame, its the people he's listening to, first of all he was told 500,000 could die, then 25,000, now its down to 5,700,and  all from the medical professional..
he has to balance things, and guess right, because guessing is all that the GMC are doing right now, but they're guessing our future

“Immunity passports” for key workers could be a way of getting people who have had coronavirus back into the workforce more quickly, scientists and politicians in the UK have suggested.

Researchers in Germany are currently preparing a mass study into how many people are already immune to the Covid-19 virus, allowing authorities to eventually issue passes to exclude workers from restrictive measures currently in place.

The study, which is yet to finalise funding, would involve testing the blood of more than 100,000 volunteers for coronavirus antibodies from mid-April. The test would then be repeated at regular intervals on an accumulatively larger sample of the population, to track the pandemic’s progress.

The shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth, said: “Germany appears to be leading the way in the testing and we have much to learn from their approach. I’ve repeatedly called for more testing and contact tracing in the UK, and we should be looking at initiatives like this closely.”

The results of the German study, organised by the government’s public health body, the Robert Koch Institute, the German Centre for Infection Research, the Institute for Virology at Berlin’s Charite hospital and blood donation services, would make it easier to decide when and where schools in the country could reopen, and which people are safe to go back to work.

“Those who are immune could be issued with a kind of vaccination pass that would for example allow them to exempted from restrictions on their activity,” said Gerard Krause, head of epidemiology at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig. The German government has not yet officially commented on the proposal for such a certificate made by scientists.

Dr Philippa Whitford, an SNP MP and former surgeon, said immunity passports could be used specifically for key workers in healthcare in the UK but would be difficult to roll out more widely across the country because of the level of administration needed.

Whitford, who is also chair of the all-party parliamentary group for vaccines, said the length of time someone may have immunity after they have had Covid-19 was still largely unknown. Someone contracting Sars, which is also a coronavirus, did not have long-term immunity – potentially only up to a year after the infection.

Professor Peter Openshaw, a member of the government’s new and emerging respiratory virus threats advisory group, said people who have recovered and test positive for coronavirus antibodies should no longer be infectious themselves and would be expected to have at least some immunity to the virus.

He said the worse case scenario – based on what is known about immunity to coronaviruses that cause common colds – is that former patients would have only partial resistance for about three months.

“It could be that this coronavirus causes a pretty robust immune response, which is durable and protective for much longer, maybe a year or even five years, but we don’t know because it’s a new virus,” he said.

Immunity passports are a “reasonable provisional measure”, Openshaw said, but he stressed that people granted the passports would have to be kept under close observation to ensure they were not becoming reinfected.

“In subsequent monitoring, it would be really important to determine whether those who do return to normal circulation are in fact protected,” he said.

It is unclear whether the millions of antibody tests the government has ordered will be sophisticated enough to reveal the extent of a person’s immunity, rather than simply returning a positive or negative result for circulating antibodies.

Concerns have been raised that wider immunity passport schemes could incentivise certain groups, such as young people who are falling into debt through lack of work, to actively contract the virus in the hope that they can return to their jobs once recovered.

But Openshaw said it would be “highly inadvisable” to breach the government’s lockdown rules and intentionally risk infection.

“Although there are risk factors for severity of illness and admission to intensive care, quite a high proportion who are being admitted are otherwise well and do not have those risk factors,” he said.

“It would be putting your life at risk to try and catch it at the moment. It would be much better to adhere to social distancing and to wait for the vaccine.”

A strange world when the most important entry on your CV is that you have had a virus and survived.
Report Darlo Bantam March 30, 2020 9:14 PM BST
Just read that Angoose. They've no idea how long we'll be immune for though, maybe even only three months yet we're on a potential six-month lockdown. Hey, you could contract this virus twice, recover twice, and no longer be immune by the time the world allows you outside to play again.
Report potlis March 31, 2020 11:02 AM BST
Thought that six month statement was about as stupid as it gets, people locked down with personal/ money / Business worries getting by in the hope it could be over quickly....Boris three weekly review....  then they are hit with this six months with only a gradual unwinding.
Surely it would have been better for those people's mental well being to keep schtum.
Report 1st time poster March 31, 2020 12:00 PM BST
if such mass testing took place common sense would say those in so called key jobs currently working would get 1st dibs at any such test,so doesn't really improve the chances of those currently on lockdown off getting their card stamped any time soon, the well off would then be buying them private and there,d be social unrest on streets imo, school kids, parents would also be high up on the list to be 1st in queue
