Will they ever learn? Chinese markets are still selling bats and slaughtering rabbits on blood-soaked floors as Beijing celebrates 'victory' over the coronavirus
By George Knowles For The Mail On Sunday

Terrified dogs and cats crammed into rusty cages. Bats and scorpions offered for sale as traditional medicine. Rabbits and ducks slaughtered and skinned side by side on a stone floor covered with blood, filth, and animal remains.

Those were the deeply troubling scenes yesterday as China celebrated its 'victory' over the coronavirus by reopening squalid meat markets of the type that started the pandemic three months ago, with no apparent attempt to raise hygiene standards to prevent a future outbreak.

As the pandemic that began in Wuhan forced countries worldwide to go into lockdown, a Mail on Sunday correspondent yesterday watched as thousands of customers flocked to a sprawling indoor market in Guilin, south-west China.

Here cages of different species were piled on top of each other. In another meat market in Dongguan, southern China, another correspondent photographed a medicine seller returning to business on Thursday with a billboard advertising bats – thought to be the cause of the initial Wuhan outbreak – along with scorpions and other creatures.

The shocking scenes came as China finally lifted a weekslong nationwide lockdown and encouraged people to go back to normal daily life to boost the flagging economy. Official statistics indicated there were virtually no new infections.

The market in Guilin was packed with shoppers yesterday, with fresh dog and cat meat on offer, a traditional 'warming' winter dish.

I think you've just got to take responsibility for what you can. Some of the food practices in more exotic places are frankly disgusting and clearly unhygenic. That said, swine flu ten years ago began in the States with unhygenic farming practices.

Is the answer to have some kind of World Police and a one-market stylee set of global regulations that we all have to adhere to? Is that what the Trump/Bojo fanboys are championing?

Anyhoo, my anger is aimed squarely at what we can control. I was listening in growing anxiety to R4 late last year as this was spreading through China and wondering then what we were doing. Turns out it was nothing.

Now we find out that the government did a dummy pandemic run in 2016 and the results were so bad that they hushed them up. Even worse, they hushed them up and ignored them, doing absolutely nothing to correct the failings.

And then this year, while Bojo is going on This Morning saying how we should just let the virus run riot and how he was shaking hands with everyone, we were allowing passengers in from Lombardy completely unchecked despite that area being the worst affected region in the western world. Soon after, Madrid caught up and we decided to allow thousands of Atleti fans to travel to Liverpool and then have hundreds of thousands of people to meet up in Cheltenham, and give wishy washy messages to businesses to close that saw them all remain open.

If we'd taken this more seriously from the get go we could be looking forward to coming out of it in a couple of weeks, not six months plus.

Well it’s a very, very important question, and that’s where a lot of the debate has been and one of the theories is, that perhaps you could take it on the chin, take it all in one go and allow the disease, as it were, to move through the population, without taking as many draconian measures. I think we need to strike a balance, I think it is very important, we’ve got a fantastic NHS, we will give them all the support that they need, we will make sure that they have all preparations, all the kit that they need for us to get through it. But I think it would be better if we take all the measures that we can now to stop the peak of the disease being as difficult for the NHS as it might be, I think there are things that we may be able to do.

None of us have been tested, none of us have any equipment bar a flimsy pair of gloves and a tiny plastic apron each, and a mask if you want it. It was a promise he shouldn't have made, Darlo. From the article in the opening post:

China also contributed to the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) desperately needed by Britain's doctors, nurses and other health professionals. At the height of the epidemic in Wuhan and surrounding Hubei province, Chinese leaders commandeered vast amounts of PPE, made in factories across China and destined for export.

UK safety equipment firm JSP had its two factories in China 'requisitioned by the government to make disposable RPE [respiratory protection equipment] for Chinese government agencies, according to a letter its chief executive Mark Johnstone sent to customers on February 3.

In addition, Chinese state-backed operatives working abroad were directed to bulk-buy medical supplies from Western countries.

Overseas offices of Greenland Group, a property firm backed by the Chinese government, bought three million masks, 700,000 hazmat suits and 500,000 pairs of gloves as it 'felt compelled… to assist in efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus, which had caused a shortage of crucial medical supplies in China,' according to a company newsletter seen by the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Chinese Communist Party has since sold hundreds of thousands of masks to France and the Netherlands, which have had to be dumped when they turned out to be faulty.

They also donated Chinese virus testing kits to Turkey, the Czech Republic and Spain, all of whom found they gave the wrong result three quarters of the time.

Germany has the advantage of not having nationalized hospitals and a nationalized health service.

You pay for either general health insurance, or personalized health insurance where your premiums depend on your own circumstances, lifestyle and state of health. The latter entitles you to superior forms of treatment and, most importantly, jumping the queue.

So, a fat German at risk from succumbing to a lethal virus, for instance, might choose to spend money on the more expensive private Krankenversicherung, be guaranteed fast and effective treatment, and so keep the number of current deaths down.

American system is completely different.

Is Germany's health care system a model for the U.S.?

...

Germany has what's called a universal multi-payer health care system. It encompasses both statutory health insurance for people who earn less than a certain salary, as well as private health insurance for those who earn more and choose to purchase their own.

Employers and their employees pay for most of the health care system in Germany through premiums. All workers contribute about 7.5 percent of their salary into a public health insurance pool. Employers match that 7.5 percent contribution.

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/germany-s-health-care-system-model-u-s-n1024491

This is the problem. Whenever it's suggested that the UK's Nationalized Health Service, with its nationalized hospitals, needs scrapping, everyone yells, "You want us to be like America! Trumpist! Racist! etc.

I don't. I want us to be like Germany, or any other EU country which wouldn't dream of nationalizing healthcare in a million years.
Report edy March 30, 2020 10:27 AM BST
While right that there is somewhat of a 2-class medical care in Germany that will often see doctors give preferential appointments to those privately insured, I don't think it's that big, or any, advantage in this particular case. Someone will get the needed and best treatment whatever the case (depending on how stretched capacities are, the privately insured without a need for an ICU bed might get a room in which he is alone though (depending on what his insurance covers), compared to the person with public insurance that gets a room with two other patients (can pay if he wants fewer))

I posted some of the reasons that are wildly speculated to play a role in Germany's comparatively low death rate the other day on another thread  (expanded and edited a bit for this post)

1. We test a lot, one of the highest test per capita rates. Germany also tests everyone who shows even mild symptons, not just hospitalised folks like some countries do (i.e we count cases that are less severe to begin with while others will only count those that are more severe to start and will hence have a worse chance of survival). With the broader testing base, also came a better isolation of those infected and hence a (slightly) better protection of the especially vulnerable.

2. Even though we test more than others overall, last I checked, we don't test post mortem (unlike Italy and I think the UK too). So the terminally ill person whose life was reduced possibly ever so slightly in Bergamo will be tested in Italy even after his death as far as I know, and then counted as a death in relation to covid-19 if the test is positive. The same does not necessarily apply to Germany.

3. The average age of those tested positive in Germany, as of right now, is far far lower than it is in Italy. It is 63 in Italy, 47 in Germany. That is a massive, massive difference for a virus that generally becomes more dangerous the older someone is. In Germany, the virus was really initially spread a lot among and by ski ressort holiday goers (i.e middle agers). Germans are also less social than Italians, especially Northern Germans kind of do social distancing as a habit, and also tend to not live multi-generational in the same house/flat (i.e less of a chance of spreading from mild/no sympton young person to grandparents/elderly people in general)

4. This obviously isn't true for all parts of Germany, but air is generally cleaner than it is in northern Italy, which has some of the worst pollution in all of Europe. Better air quality will likely contribute to less severe respiratory illnesses.

5. Germany has far better capacities regarding ventilators and beds in ICUs. I think Germany has the highest per capita of ICU beds in Europe.

Thank you for that, edy.

My only experience of West German healthcare came in 1982. The headmaster of the school in which I was teaching virtually gave himself a heart attack when he realized he'd been employing me for several months without my having been tested for TB. Being British, I just flippantly asked him whether he thought I looked like someone with tuberculosis, at which point he went into meltdown. I had to go home immediately and make an appointment to get tested and receive the necessary certificates.

Very interesting point about the lack of post-mortem procedures in Germany. I wondered this when Andrew Neil said he'd looked at it and concluded Germany's criteria for whether a death should be counted as one due to the Chinese virus were the same as everyone else's. the criteria might be the same, but the investigations for determining whether a case fits the criteria evidently are not.

Thanks again.

But, their number 1 selling point is cheap, excessive and hardworking labour force. They do not manufacture (yet) automobiles, heavy machine, white goods, computers, etc, but assemble most of them. But, they own a huge chunk of Africa though.

I do not buy stuff from China (or associate of China) on 'ebay' or Amazon in the UK. I think the rest of the world will do well to recognise their ever growing supremacy economically, and erosion of democracy within. And, their subtle buying up of chunks of commodities in Africa is to ensure economic supremacy can be maintained; Africa is too poor, corrupt and needy to refuse.

I believe China with their world economic power will totally dominate once they possess the abilities and intellectual properties of USA, Japan, S Korea, Germany, France and UK.

I think a trade boycott is one of the most powerful things we can do and one of the languages these people understand.

I personally do not buy anything knowingly from Israel, certainly fruit.

I think you boys should spread your call to stop buying Chinese products where possible.

China has approved the use of bear bile to treat critically ill coronavirus patients.

The National Health Commission has recommended the use of Tan Re Qing - an injection that contains bear bile, goat horn and herbs - to treat patients with Covid-19.

But there is no evidence the mixture has any medicinal value.

Bear bile, which is produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years and fetches a high price in the illegal international market.

From the BBC news site.

So we can look forward to thousands more bears caged for life in China (thousands already are).

Yes the bear bile thing is shocking. If you hate it there is a charity called Animals Asia that tries to stop that.
Oh and the dog eating festival was not long ago, where they boil dogs alive, and pet dogs are stolen in large numbers for food.

More I think about it ... there are an awful LOT of things to be said about China. Still it's a Communist Utopia..
