How did the government come to that conclusion? How much did off-licences contribute to Tory party? There are sufficient booze to drown one's sorrows in supermarkets plus corner shop yet this retailer is allowed to open. If packing workers in the Tube is not making a mockery of this "lockdown" this finally has.

What is a lockdown? And, what is its main objective? It seems the government has lost its eye of the ball.....completely. What next?????

The Wickes next door to me appears shut, but strangely a lot of vans, cars parked with the side door open.

It's definitely quieter but not everyone on anywhere near a full lockdown.

People like a drink.Could boost morale and prevent riots and people going stir-crazy. As long as 2 metre is observed, whats the problem?
Wear gloves, wash hands when you get in.

Supermarkets sell alcohol

So it would be unfair to close Off-licences

Some people need alcohol...it is not life or death but can feel like it for some

i was surprised to even find beer UBLE    ,plenty there too ... honestly thought it'd all be gone by now  as i thought breweries might have shut down unless they have such a huge back stock because of the pub closures    Happy

Practise forbearance or even abstinence and/or be resourceful. Alcohol is not an essential item to most; the existence of supermarkets and corner shops is well adequate to cater for those wanting a drink.

It's a lockdown!

Whether you regard alcohol as essential or not is not the full picture. If the government allows supermarkets to stay open AND sell alcohol, it would be discriminatory to ban off licenses and wine merchants, many of whom are small business who would be requiring government funding.  It's a no brainer really.

Brewery industry is on a total lockdown for a predictive 8 weeks. Booze will run out, stock up now!

I understand. What I'm trying to say is alcohol is already available in supermarkets and corner shops ie these premises sell food and alcohol too thus it's not a necessity to open off-licences too because the fewer shops are open the lesser people will be on the road or more people in self-isolation or hibernation practising self-distancing.

If this is not "lockdown" the next two weeks' version (when we get to the present stage of Italy) could be house arrest for most. And, that truly will be a sentence unfamiliar to most.

Ok, you drinkers stock up now.

Are you saying off-licences are shops that only sell booze? I haven't known of any such shops for years.

Actually, there is a " booze 4 less " shop in my local High Street, I shall check it out some time. Won't use it, don't approve of such places but it is what it is.

Off-licence like Oddbins and Threshers (when it was still around) sold nothing but drinks and crisps - no food. The off-licence selling food is known as a corner shop.

It does seem a strange decision, probably because of the high taxes on drink and cigarettes

If they try and stop Vodka sales in Eastern Europe, ww3 will break out.

Anyway it's basic science, if you're off your box and passed out in front of a paused Game of Thrones episode, then sleeping it off for a day saying "never again", you aren't out infecting anyone.
Also you get to watch whatever you were watching again as you can't remember any of it, thus encouraging you to stay inside even longer.
Two benefits for the price of one.

Anyway in my experience off licenses tend to be quiet civilised shops (maybe I'm in a low alcoholic area!), unlike supermarkets.

If people want to just get a bottle or 3, it's probably far safer to pop into an offy and be in and out in 2 minutes without having to wade through 50 people to get to a back aisle then queue with 20 people panic buying Andrex, Spaghetti, and "medicinal fish tank cleaner"..

We've already had panic buying of booze as it is.

There were 7,551 deaths registered in the UK in 2018 that related to alcohol-specific causes, lower than the previous year’s 7,697 deaths but still the second highest since the time series began in 2001.

Further to my post and a couple of questions it raised.  My nearest village (6k residents) has one off licence and one wine merchants - neither sell anything except wine, spirits and beer, although the offie sells crisps and savouries. It has no mainstream supermarket, just an everyday Co-op which of course sells everything you would expect.

I think imp123 its actually known as a licensed grocer.
It appears you are searching for things to moan about so you can have a go at the government.
On a parallel with the looking to be offended mob.
