Wonder how many co's are making their staff work and also claiming from the govt?

The service company I work laid 3 staff off last Thursday and at the time it seemed unfair on them even they were apparently chosen for bad attitude. Then the 80% wages thing was announced. Yesterday I visited 3 business, drove 180 miles, running around like a goon getting stressed as we are now short staffed and also being exposed to this virus all for 20% more. Got to say one manufacturing plant I visited I was shocked at their attitude to this virus. ‘Business as usual’ they joked with lots of Eastern European & British Asian employees who are ignoring the 2 metre rule and using a finger print recognition door access system!
The guys laid off must of been lapping it up sitting in the sun.
I like others have volunteered to be laid off as it is by far the best deal but within 24hrs the company have changed tact and there are now no plans to lay anyone else off.
This 80% payment guaranteed or is it something the company has to apply for? If it’s something the company has to apply for I wouldn’t be surprised if some miss out.

They will use the February PAYE returns as the base case, you will not be able to suddenly appear from nowhere or with an inflated salary.

The company requires to apply for a grant which will be processed via the PAYE system.

That completely misses the people who are made to work by a company who then claims the 80% wage allowance

Everybody will suddenly be on 2500 per month too

Lot of waiters suddenly appearing at take away Gaffs

Furloughed workers
If your employer cannot cover staff costs due to COVID-19, they may be able to access support to continue paying part of your wage, to avoid redundancies.

If your employer intends to access the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, they will discuss with you becoming classified as a furloughed worker. This would mean that you are kept on your employer’s payroll, rather than being laid off.

To qualify for this scheme, you should not undertake work for them while you are furloughed. This will allow your employer to claim a grant of up to 80% of your wage for all employment costs, up to a cap of £2,500 per month.

You will remain employed while furloughed. Your employer could choose to fund the differences between this payment and your salary, but does not have to.

If your salary is reduced as a result of these changes, you may be eligible for support through the welfare system, including Universal Credit.

We intend for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme to run for at least 3 months from 1 March 2020, but will extend if necessary.


How to access the scheme

You will need to:
designate affected employees as ‘furloughed workers,’ and notify your employees of this change - changing the status of employees remains subject to existing employment law and, depending on the employment contract, may be subject to negotiation

submit information to HMRC about the employees that have been furloughed and their earnings through a new online portal (HMRC will set out further details on the information required)

HMRC will reimburse 80% of furloughed workers wage costs, up to a cap of £2,500 per month. HMRC are working urgently to set up a system for reimbursement. Existing systems are not set up to facilitate payments to employers.

There will no doubt be significant variation on the interpretation of this.

One of the key points to be resolved is employers national insurance contribution, note that there is a reference to all employment costs.
