Let’s hope this year is not as bad as ‘17-‘18. That was a terrible time for our country. Cry

In the 2017 to 2018 winter period, there were an estimated 50,100 excess winter deaths in England and Wales.
The number of excess winter deaths in 2017 to 2018 was the highest recorded since winter 1975 to 1976.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/excesswintermortalityinenglandandwales/2017to2018provisionaland2016to2017final

For Northern Ireland the figure was 1497. https://www.nisra.gov.uk/sites/nisra.gov.uk/files/publications/EWM_2017_18_WEB.xls

Scotland 4810. https://www.eas.org.uk/en/increased-winter-mortality-excess-winter-deaths_50538/

These are EXCESS winter deaths. There were 20,188 deaths registered in Scotland in the four months of winter 2018/19 (December to March). That’s 168 per day....

Indeed, Inj but those are final figures.  What's currently occurring is a developing situation.  If rules had been brought in back then, perhaps the figures would have been lower?

Yes trilby - there can always be measures taken to reduce deaths. But how risk averse should society become?

In theory all processed food should be banned given the harm it can cause. And alcohol..... quite a pickle we find ourselves in.

I know Inj and I ask myself the same Qs.

Thing is, Covid-19 is a big unknown.  We don't even know whether it can be caught again yet.

There’s no cure for the common cold. Maybe there won’t be for this, Herd immunity still makes sense to me. If our bodies can learn to fight it we’ll be ok. Still gonna
take out the weak though....

Wrong weather for a lockdown. It’s gorgeous out there!

the healthcare system in any country would not cope if left to herd immunity, thats the problem

Herd immunity's what we're doing though, isn't it?  Flattening the peak and holding back the flow initially for three weeks - or 12 if you're vulnerable - then slowly turn the tap back on if it's working.

I feel sorry for people cooped up and without a garden.  Not going to be easy for them.

Yup, we've become complacent with easy life.  Time for a reality check.
