It is all very well suggesting if you can't go out use online shopping but in reality for most people the option doesn't exist.
The capacity simply isn't there.
Most are not taking on new customers and if they are you simply can't book a delivery slot for at least three weeks. The system is in total chaos.
So don't put up advice that sounds good but reality doesn't exist.

Agree with that right.
They are urgently trying to up capacity for the shielded groups. A lot of recoding is being done and community groups are being formed. It will be chaos in the early days before things settle into a new normal.

"A new normal" sounds ominous. Agree with this and as previously mentioned on other threads, it doesn't really matter if there is a slot available or not, you'll be lucky to get half the order anyway.
I ordered online shop 10 days ago for today, just got e mail re items out of stock I ordered, toilet roll, bleach, steamed rice,deodrant, soap, butter, jam! Soup, all unavailable, yet man from Sainsburys on news just now say plenty of everything in warehouses and dont panic!! So all that is getting delivered is chicken in breadcrumbs, bacon, ham and Champagne.
We will experience many versions of "normal" in the next twelve months.

How about ID cards, 1 per household, which can only be used once per week or whatever. Still early days, but if it does spread rapidly then this could work.

Your delivery was shopped at probably the worst time for online shopping in JS history, Deptford. You couldn't know this 10 days ago, so it's rank bad luck.

Obviously not possible in a couple of days, but differentdrum is referring to people who can't leave the house. They need to rely on the community, family, friends, or indeed online shopping.

back in the 70s they issued ration coupons for petrol

People need a reality check, this is a fundamental change in all our lifestyles, and the government or other agencies don't have a magic wand that puts everything back to how it used to be.

This is a bottle neck, you have to laugh. The demand for online shopping will be permanently high for the foreseeable future, but most people will get mostly what they want (with some capping) quite soon.
I'm sharing this tip in case people aren't already doing it. Secure your delivery with a minimum order with anything that you might use as far ahead as possible. When you approach the day, edit the order with what you actually need. A couple of hours before edit cut off, review the trolley for anything known to be out of stock.
Start getting used to repetitive and bland diets, eating what is available, being less concerned with what you would ideally like to eat.

I was just highlighting that at the moment online shopping doesn't exist. It isn't an option so why pretend it is?
Not everyone is going to have someone willing to do their shopping on a regular basis. People no longer to talk to their neighbours. How do you suddenly achieve that community spirit which is in short supply? It strikes me that somehow people are going to have to get through this at a local level because general comments from the government are going to be no use at all. Some of these people don't appear to have a connection with the real world.
They are sending a list of the most vulnerable out and I could well be on it. If eating wasn't a problem I would be quite happy to isolate myself for several weeks. If you are telling someone to do that then you have to have a plan for everyone, not just a certain percentage and the rest don't matter.

Online shopping does exist, just not for everyone. It's impossible to legislate during an event like this for the individual circumstances of approaching 70 million people.

'Just not for everyone' is a complete understatement. Effectively, for a huge percentage of people online shopping doesn't exist. You could not get a delivery slot with any of them for the next three weeks or more and as has been said even those who were lucky enough to have delivery slots are not getting what they have ordered.
It's a very narrow tightrope they are walking on, trying to find the delicate balance between hope, reality, and apocalypse.
As far as self-isolating is concerned, the reality is different.
How many people who are supposed to be self-isolating still go shopping?
As for telling old timers to lock themselves away for 12 weeks, I can't see the vast majority doing that.
Nick Owen the TV presenter is off work because he's over 70 and is self-isolating, yet he was speaking from his home about his shopping in the village since he's been off!

Some of those going shopping probably don't think they have a choice.
That interview with Nick Owen was a few days ago. Would he be on this vulnerable list that is going to be circulated this week. If he is I doubt he will be shopping.

think online shopping in supermarkets accounts for something like 7% of all sales. thankfully being doing it for ages but now booking a slot 3 or 4 weeks in advance straight after each week's delivery
How would you do that because there are literally no slots available even that far in advance? I presume you are not sitting waiting 24 hours a day in the hope one becomes available?
