American country music singer and songwriter Kenny Rogers who was known for songs including 'The Gambler' and 'Woman' has died at the age of 81

In a career spanning six decades, he was best known for hits such as The Gambler, Coward of the County and Lucille.
His trademark husky voice secured him 20 solo single number ones on the US country charts between 1977-87. Rogers also enjoyed success in partnership with Dolly Parton, particularly with their award-winning 1982 song Islands in the Stream. The three-time Grammy award-winning artist had announced a farewell tour in 2015, but continued performing until 2017. Further performances were planned, but subsequently cancelled in April 2018 due to unspecified “health challenges”. He said in a statement at the time: “I've thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to say farewell to the fans over the course of the past two years. “I could never properly thank them for the encouragement and support they've given me throughout my career and the happiness I've experienced as a result of that.” Kenny Rogers was born and raised in public housing alongside seven siblings in Houston, Texas. His breakthrough came in 1966 when he was asked to join the New Christy Minstrels, who reformed as First Edition and scored a pop hit with the song Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In), which was featured in the cult classic film The Big Lebowski. Mr Rogers was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2013 and gained a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Country Music Association the same year. The Gambler was adopted as the team song by England at the Rugby World Cup in 2007, with Rogers telling them in a video message: “I don't know a whole lot about rugby but it's a song that means a lot to me and I'm mighty proud that you guys found something in it to be your inspiration.” Mr Rogers’ family is planning a private service out of concern for the national coronavirus emergency, according to a statement. A public memorial to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. |

Just Dropped In was psychedelia not country and his most famous song that's not mentioned above "Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town" though certainly basically country melodically ,lyrically was an anti-Vietnam war song which was not liked in mainstream country circles.

I've just reminded myself of the lyrics to Coward Of The County. At the time it was no.1,I was too young to realise what "They took turns at Becky" actually meant.

A movie was made about 'Billie Jean'
I remember the last time I saw Kenny, he said" encores are a piece of nonesense" so when he said this is the last song it really was the last song.He also asked how many guys had been dragged to the gig by their wives. Apparently on his last UK tour he wasnt well and his voice was terrible. |
