Tens of thousands of people gathered in Bangladesh for a mass prayer session on Wednesday, amid fears that it could lead to a wider outbreak.

Local police chief Tota Miah told AFP news agency that 10,000 Muslims had gathered in Raipur town to pray "healing verses" from the Koran. But some eyewitnesses told the BBC the figure was closer to 30,000.

The religious event at Raipur in Lakshmipur district came as Bangladesh confirmed its first death due to the virus. Some 17 people in the country have tested positive so far, although many experts are sceptical over the official figures.

Mr Miah said organisers did not get permission from the authorities to hold the event - though such local gatherings in Bangladesh often do not rely on getting official permits. BBC Bengali's correspondent Akbar Hossain spoke to locals who said the event was organised by a religious leader who held a certain amount of "influence" in the small town.

He urged people to join him in praying for protection from the virus, and after the event, told people that they would now be "free from the coronavirus". Our correspondent says that the southern part of Bangladesh is more religious, with people there "passionately believing that Islamic sermons and prayer are able to solve their problems". According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, the prayers performed were that of the Six Quranic Verses of Healing.

This is the problem - Backward DIM medieval style Countries full of BARMPOT religious nonsense beliefs.

Turkey just banned flights into the country .... "as 20,000  Muslims returned from a religious get-together in Saudi Arabia"

All religion - absolute superstitious Ballcocks.

Where is GOD whilst all this VIRUS stuff is going-on?

Not hearing a murmur from the 'God Squad' and 'Bible-bashers' - are we?

- and -  Allah isn't looking after his mob, either.

I'm sure that a special exemption will be made for these Peace-Loving sorts to congregate wherever and whenever they like, regardless of how that might damage the UK's battle against the virus.

Ditto in other supine European countries as well.

Onlooker

It is not just other countries who have "Backward DIM medical style" opinions .
There are a few on this forum claiming it is not actually a virus or it isn't as deadly as the medical professionals say. Those views could result in deaths if anyone acts on their advice. Not sure why Betfair publish those views?

On a less serious note, there are many up in arms that there isn't horse racing or that a football team might not be allowed to pick up a shiny piece of metal.

All very worrying. Think of the sacrifices made in WW2, all we are being asked to do is avoid physical social contact/ stay at home . Do that and lives will be saved.

None of this will be solved until there is a vaccine, you can't shutdown for a year.
As soon as people go back to their daily lives they will soon fall back into bad habits and you will get another wave of deaths/sickness

To some extent I agree about a vaccine but wouldn't a quick test also do the trick?

If a test cost 50p & could give a result in 1 minute, then people could be tested every morning before going to work. If they are positive they call a ream who try to work out who infected you & who you may have infected. Hopefully 7 days later you have recovered & life goes on.

Obviously neither a quick test or vaccine does not exist.

I believe the perpetrators/organisers of mass gatherings for a religious purpose or otherwise are self-obsessed, illiterate and backward and have little consideration for others. I hope anyone doing the same here is put behind bars for the reason of safety for others and possible retribution against themself for contravening the guidance by health experts and government.
