Scary stuff, especially when you consider that the cumulative global number is currently 7,511.

Chief Science Officer just said to select committee.

Yes I heard him say that.

I also heard him say on the radio that wearing a face doesn't help. Yet all the front line medical staff wear them.

So we've got two accounts today, one 20,000 deaths and the other reckons 250,000. What worries me is having people like these advising the government.

Is Ms Abbott doing the figures?

according to the model if no action at all was taken the total would be at least 500,000 with about 12,000 a day dying at the peak.

the risk with the new policy is, even if the assumptions are right this time, people getting bored as time goes on and there being a spike later in the year/next year.

Reminds me of George C. Scott as General Buck Turgidson in Dr Strangelove.

When he was advising the president of the estimated casualties if America got in first with a nuclear strike.

Turgidson:

''Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed, but I do say no more than 10 to 20 million killed, tops! Uh, depending on the breaks.''

Muffley:

''I will not go down in history as the greatest mass murderer since Adolf Hitler.''

Aren't you reading it properly, jolly?

"IF no action at all is taken"

So action will be taken and the numbers will come down, its being done from a modelling system its all nonsense

if they did nothing at all those are the numbers, and there is a massive assumption in there about the nhs so it may have been worse.

Only 20 deaths in germany on those figures thats 0.2% hopefully will be somewhere in the middle of that..

20,000 seems far too low  . Confused

100,000  would normally be seriously ill or in the last throws normally over the next 3 or 4 months as it is  ...so they are saying it will only finish off the very worst cases  ?
By:
SontaranStratagem
When: 17 Mar 20 17:52
I'm guessing 250,000 over the next 12 months, that would be about right

Maybe 350,000 will be the finishing number, and lets just say yeah that amount of people died? it would be 98% over 60s with pre existing health conditions that were left to die because the NHS stopped/banned them from healthcare

500,000 isn't out the question if you factor in that 98% either
By:
SontaranStratagem
When: 17 Mar 20 17:53
98% maybe a bit over the top, maybe 85% with the other 15% being people with health problems anyway
By:
SontaranStratagem
When: 17 Mar 20 17:54
But it wont be this virus that kills them, it will be lack of health care/drugs they are on for existing health conditions, ie diabetics etc
By:
SontaranStratagem
When: 17 Mar 20 17:55
In fact if that was the case you'd be looking at over 500,000 people because I'd wager at least 1,000,000 people are on prescription drugs for all kinds of things? and they need them as well Sad

1,300 a day on average die in England or 500,000 a year so unless the Government know something we don't,the whole thing is way over the top.

Don't talk rubbish, it's called triage system, the word comes from the napoleon wars, no point clogging the beds and ventilators up with people that won't recover. People that were fit and healthy and have highest chance of recovery will be given priority, bbc scotland yesterday and other media outlets were giving airtime to old folks grumbling about being under "lock down" with no mention of how the hospitals will be swamped and they won't get into car park let alone front door.Media are a shower of scum and need reigned in.The debate should have been about stay in and take responsibility for yourself as if you get it your likely to die. Also how do you keep front line health workers free from the virus? Worst thing you can do right now is visit doctor or go to hospital for anything. People need to realise as soon as it gets messy things will change rapidly and there will be very little help, they will be swamped quickly.

Sir Patrick said keeping the number of coronavirus deaths in the UK at '20,000 and below' would be a 'good outcome' but still 'horrible'.

'That is the hope that we can get it down to that,' he said.

'To put that into perspective every year in seasonal flu the number of deaths is thought to be about 8,000.

'So if we can get this down to numbers 20,000 and below that is a good outcome in terms of where we would hope to get to in this outbreak.

'But I mean it is still horrible. That is still an enormous number of deaths and it is an enormous pressure on the health service.'
